  • Almost the holiest fisher that ever was!

Hello fishers, just heading off for a vacation, then off to the northern BC for some real work... Fishing the Skeena, kitimat and others out in that area.    ;D Since I have never been there, I would really appreciate some tips on what is going on there, or maybe a few pools that are worth checking out.  If you are secretive about posting online, I would be happy if you emailed me at jzuccolo(at)ucalgary.ca, but please no proposals, my wife would get mad  :o

Anyhow, thanks in advance, I am really stoked about this trip and hope I don't get eaten by a bear.

PS, fishing in the alberta foothills has been absolutely ridiculous lately, with a couple of monster bulls on dries (stones and mayflies even) for myself and another lowermainland ex-pat, some awsome brown trout fishing with dries, and some sight fishing to beautiful brookies in some beaver ponds while being eaten by mosquitoes...  ;)

Cheers, and tight lines,

Jon Z

Jonny 5: try to pick up a copy of the summer edition of Salmon Trout Steelheader magazine. They did a feature story on the Kitimat River complete with maps and techniques to use. As far as good fishing spots, plenty of spots to fish on the Kitimat River around the Haisla bridge, and downstream towards the hatchery. In that area the fish will be fresh and full of vigor. You may also want to access Noel Gyger's site to get up to date information on rivers and streams in that area. Have fun, and let us know how you make out in your fishing trip.

Hey Jonny 5,

I was up there a couple of years ago. It is different fishing compared to the South Coast.

1) There is no "finesse fishing". I pulled out a size 3 blue fox spinner and got laughed at. It was size 4 minimum. Guys were using size 5 + 6 spinners. The spoons that worked well were the larger "ironheads" "kohos" and "kit-a-mat" spoons in 1 oz.

2) I was going to use jigs that I use down here .. too small. All the jigs that guys were using up there were 1 oz jig heads on 3/0 and 4/0 hooks. You don't fish these jigs under a float, ... just cast them out and "twitch" them in.

3) The pinks were very abundant, ... and bigger than the south coast ones. The seemed to hit anything. The cohos are easily in the mid-teens ... and VERY aggressive.

4) For rod & reel ... I was using a Sage 3106 (10 - 20 lb), with 20# line. This was a perfect set-up. I did'nt use anything lighter that a 12# leader. I did go lighter but every hook-up was a snapped leader.

5) Bring ibuprofen. After fighting big fish all day, you tend to get a little sore !!

Good Luck .... and post lots of pictures. Below is an average sized Coho.

Thanks for the tips!  The ibuprofien sounds like a good one haha.  Will let you know how it goes.

Jonny 5 over and out.
