Like I said I have experience on this river and I walk around things like this. I am by far not a professional but I am smart enough not to get myself killed. Had me and my friend not been there this guy would have died most likely. If you go in pairs (2 different tubes) you at least have the chance of someone helping you since they have a floatation device. I will continue tubing, not because Im stupid and want to be killed, but because I know what the river can do, and I respect that and avoid everything I can. This means before hand I go and scout everything out and then do a test run with one friend so that I know what to expect if I am to take anyone else with me. Like I said it is all common sense, if you get out at the right times or get out of the way then there would be way less problems. Not saying it would eliminate all accidents but getting stuck in logs would be done with.

Everyday I dont get it , someone died there why the hell would you risk your life going the same route ??? No matter how good you really think you are, why keep going down it.... It should be a very valuble lesson to be learnt hear. I just dont understand why someone would keep risking there life

If you wanna go tubing go to the Chilliwack Water slides and go down the tube run till your sick of tubing

Its to late to look back once the **** happens and once you have allready been warned

Dude, Silly logic. Do you drive? You ever driven down a road someone died in a car accident (ie: ever seen a cross on the side of the road)? Why do you keep driving there?

It's impossible to live a life risk free, especially if you want to have a fun life. If your smart about the risks you take you can minimize the trouble you get into.

well said dion.

IMO, the vedder is no place to swim or tube, but I can understand why people swim and tube it. There is a big difference between Cultas Lake waterslides and the river ::)

Cody,

If you dont have knowledge of rafting down a river and risk the chance of being killed by all means go ahead at least the water slides are monitored for any situation that could occur... who is monitoring you at the river know one thats why your dead !!

Spring, my point is that cultas lake water slide rapids are way different than tubing down the vedder. Tubing down the vedder is more of a thrill than going down the waterslide rapids, which is why people continue to tube the vedder

99% of these tubers going down a river dont have any KNOWLEDGE or TRAINING and are getting killed..... Silly logic i dont think so

Every Day was the single person you were questioning. And as he explained he has experience drifting the river and knows the dangers involved. He's already explained to others how to avoid this log jam that's killed two (nearly three). I guess he's part of that 1%.

All the knowledge and training in the world still can't prevent you from having accidents on the road. There are always the other drivers. Tubing isn't like that, it is completely dependent on your respect for the river.

I have you on the lifegaurd part  ;D  But not the fact that the river is unpredictable. At some points you will notice a rapid you hit last time is wayyy bigger this time and almost flips you and at other times it is hardley there. When the river drops it also can be a problem because new troughs can form or new currents that will pull you different ways you would have never gone before (It also can expose new logs/rocks/etc). Its never safe but at least you can learn a few things to make it safer.

Spring-- its not a matter of everyone ignoring the hazard of rafting or swimming a fast white water of log jam strewn peice of water---- THEY JUST DONT REALISE THE HAZARDS AND THE RISKS!.,  I have my Swift Water Rescue Techs certification. I took my training on the upper Chilliwack River. Until I was draped over a log in a moderate flow I had no appreciation that it may be impossible for a swimmer to heave himself over or under a sweeper. Put that sweeper in a jam, so the option of swimming UNDER the jam is not an option, then you have a recipe for death.  But how many 17 yr old kids will believe what I and other say about the hazards-- ???  "Hey-- its hot! And its fun-- and it cant happen to me" ... Sad-- but predictable. I feel for the family and friends.

But it WILL happen again ... thats the worse part.

Maybe they should put signs up to warn people. Once again I already told you I dont have the attitude that "It wont happen to me."  I don't take risks out there, I watch carefully and make sure that I am either out of the river or going the opposite way of a hazard. I have a lot of respect for this river. I pretty much live on it and am out everyday. Last year I also pulled someone out of a log jam who had been stuck and this year all I could do was watch, which scared the hell outta me. Before you go saying that Im a stupid teen who has no idea what I'm doing and am and idiot for going down a river maybe you should read what I have said previously. If you really want to get into this, do you go fishing. If so, do you cross the river to get to your spot. The SAME risk is involved, no matter how shallow the water. You trip and fall and get your foot stuck your dead, especially if you fish alone. Same can be said if you fall and just downstream there is a log jam. We all take risks, although some seem greater than others that is not always the case. Anything to do with the river is dangerous, and sometimes people don't realize it and that's why they die.....

If the government is not going to stop people from rafting the river, they should pay some professional company to saw down all the dangerous log jams to save these poor young souls who don't know what they are getting into.
