Lafarge Lake, October 4th 2008
« on: October 04, 2008, 12:59:06 PM »

I believe Lafarge has just been stocked so I thought I would get out there this early this morning. First tried a green wooly bugger and felt a few light taps but nothing hooked.  After 30 minutes I switched to a rolled muddler and landed one lost one with about three missed hits over the next hour and a half.

It seemed very slow compared to the last time it was stocked and I did not see anybody else catch anything - not sure if changing the fly actually made a difference.  Green wooly bugger always worked very well there before.

Took my litle one to Lafarnge on Friday. Caught and released couple of small Trout (8" to 10") We saw a big net in the mioddle of lake with whole bunch of good siz trout caught in there. Later on a boat which to seemed belog to fishery came and collected all the fish. Not excactly sure as why they were taking those trouts, perhaps part of testing. Also if you notice the weight of the fish stocked this round is under 200 gm, again not sure why stocking such little fishes. ???

I agree, the trout were definitely smaller than I saw from the last stocking.  It could be the reason I was unable to get them on the larger woolly bugger pattern I used back in May.

By the way, I think you did well to catch a few.  Yesterday morning I did not see anybody catching anything - it was early morning so I was a bit surprised by that.

The gill net in the middle of the lake is placed by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and the Ministry of Environment. It is part of a sampling project for the "Fishing in the City" program. It was only placed for one night. I am not aware of any further netting involved. I do not have information beyond this, but if interested I can request for it. The same has been done for Green Timbers and Rice Lake.

Here is the information on the net studies that took place last week.

Quote
The objective of this study is to mesh stocking numbers with angler effort to create the best fishery possible without over or under stocking.

To do this, FFSBC designed a mark-recapture study for Rice, Lafarge, Como and Green Timbers Lakes.  This study will help both MOE and FFSBC to determine the number of rainbow trout from the spring stocking that have "over-summered" and now remain in the lake.  A known number of rainbow trout were marked with an adipose clip and stocked into the lakes (i.e. the fall stocking).  Random sampling with the gillnet caught a mix of marked and unmarked fish.  Calculations will allow for the population of spring stocked fish to be determined.

Gillnet studies are also useful to determine general fish health; size at age; and the fish species present in the lake.  The information can be compared to previous information for the lake; regional/provincial standards; or used in conjunction with other studies (i.e. angler surveys).  Resulting management actions can then take place based on known information (i.e. stock more or less fish).

For Lafarge Lake, the gillnet study last week found a "new" fish species in the lake that is a cause for concern.  A single bass was found in Lafarge, a species not previously identified in the lake.

Here is the explanation on the smaller trout in fall stockings.

Quote
The fish are averaging just under 200 grams which is smaller than the spring releases. We are not able to get our fish to size as easily for the fall. We want to try and get the fish in as early in the fall as possible but we also recognize the desire for the fish to be of reasonable size. 200 grams is our target for this year and we are now at it. Unfortunately, we are late in getting the fish out. The next round of stocking in later October will see fish over 200 grams but unlikely we will see any reach 300 as in the spring.

We do have a tentative plan to have larger fish for next fall. We are hoping to over summer some fish from the 2008 production  year (at Chehalis) through to next fall (2009). These fish will be quite large (400 + grams) and we will hopefully be able to start stocking in mid September (water temp dependant) to try and give people a longer fall fishing season.

Wow, 400+ grams fish. Are these spawners or younger fish? Can't wait to have them on the fly rod.  :)

400g fish will be all triploids (sterile).
They do occasionally toss the brood stock into the lower mainland lakes, but these are larger than 1 kg.

I wonder how many others that never showed up in the net? I wish that bucket brigade would quit it..so I guess in a couple years Lafarge may have to get the rotenone treatment?

So Rod do you think these fish(the trout only) were put back ???
Nice to here they are taking this stocking program seriously
now if there were bass in there will it effect the trout ???
We have bass in some of our lakes in the Lower mainland allready dont we
and before anyone jumps on me here this is just a question
and i dont want to start a bass war
but is it a bad thing to have them along side trout ???

Sampled trout were killed in this study. The sample size is a small percentage of the entire stock.

The discovery of one bass does not indicate an established population in the lake, but as the message above has already mentioned, this is a cause for concern in the management.
