Coho on the Vedder
« Reply #4 on: October 08, 2008, 08:11:19 PM »

Went out this morning with Hawg Hunter and tried the run and pond below the Island in canal at first light but nothing.  Went up to the River side Campground across from Lickman and chucked flies in the big frog pond.

I hit a nice coho in the 8-9 lb range, beautiful chrome fish, but she got into the coho spin and threw my blue muddler.  About 20 minutes later I caught a coho jack on a blue minnow fly.  Hawg hunter put on his big gaudy blue flash fly and hooked and landed a beauty buck coho about 8 lbs.  We hit a couple more but no hookups.  Another angler came and joined us and hooked and lost two nice coho on Colorado spinners.  A young fellow across from us caught his first fly caught coho jacks too.

We went down the river to another area and I hooked another coho but again the turtle did his coho spin and threw the hook. Left the campground and headed down to the run above the train bridge.  First cast with a gold coho spoon and I hooked a beauty.  Took about 20 minutes to land her.  Bright doe coho around 10 lbs.  She hit so hard and fought so hard.  But sadly, I had hooked her just under the pectoral fin so back she went.  So close but so far away.

We had a few more hits then left around 4 pm.  Over all it was a good day for us.  Saw a good number of coho around, in fact, more of them and fewer springs.  Which makes me happier anyways.
Hoping to get out tomorrow for some more fly chucking. My 7 weight Sage Z Axis is so nice to cast and play a fish.  Need a lot more action on it the next few weeks.  Rod

Hopefully I don't oversleep again tomorrow. I was planning on fishing today, but I guess I was too comfortable. I need to catch a few more fish on the 9 wt spey.
