Stave River, November 1st 2008: Are chums finished?
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:09:44 AM »

I went out to the Stave yesterday and saw little evidence of any fresh fish. Lots of very old chums in the shallows or dead on the shore.   There were so many old chums in the shallows it was all to easy to foul hook them accidentally when retrieving my float at the end of the swing.  I had to keep my rod up high retrieving my gear just to avoid that.

It looks like the prospect of catching any decent fish there is probably over so I won't be out there trying for Chums again this year.

I don't think they're done yet. I caught this one on Nov 1, and one just as clean on Oct 31. I think there's just more "old" ones around so the ratio of good to bad isn't what it was a week ago.

Are you fishing very close to the Dam or still in the toilet bowl area...?

Heard the Coho are just coming up the Stave and hiding between all of the colored boots... ;D

I was at the Stave briefly yesterday and saw one chrome coho landed by a fly guy in the toilet bowl.  I did not see any clean chum but that does not mean there are not still a few clear ones coming in

I saw one coho landed and a sliver chum but anything worth catching seems to be overwhelmed by half dead chums.

Since I only have weekends I don't feel confident things will be better six days from now but, sure, maybe there's the odd fish worth catching still.

Usually by late October, just about all the chum salmon that you see in the river would be coloured. Of course some fresh fish could be found here and there since the run continues to arrive well into November, but one shouldn't expect too much if you are after chum salmon. Hohummm's fish is a fine specimen!

That being said, like other tributaries on the north side of the Fraser River, November can be an excellent month for coho salmon on the Stave River. These coho will mostly in very good shape.

If you were asking me, I was on the west side downstream from the trailer park. Oh, and I just took it out of the smoker...Should change the name from "chum" to "yumyum"  :)

Well this is good to know.  Maybe I won't be giving up on the Stave too quickly then :)

At my level I cannot hope for a Coho and, even a colored chum makes me very happy as long as it's got some fight left.

You should be able to find clean chum for another week or so; from what I have observed the times I have been out this year they are running about three weeks on the Stave. The coho are late too which means there is a good chance they may be around until the end of Dec. Around Remembrance day is when I start looking for the Springs, hoping to add another date to my Tyee tattoo next week.
