I am new to fishing, and looking to get some decent waders, but I am not sure what type to get.  I know that 5mm neoprene would be warm in the winter months, but will I be super hot in the summer?  And, would breathables be warm enough in the winter?

i wear breathables and only breathables. if you layer properly they are your best friend in the winter OVER neo's. neo's dont breath therefore you sweat inside and get slightly wet which turns into getting cold easier. breathables are also easier to hike in, wade in, blah blah, do anything in LOL

best tip i can give you is not to go super cheap on breathables though. I would say go in the middle area. take a look at the Simms L2 as they are Gor-Tex legs which means tough and very good breathing ability. they retail for around $350 i think.

however if you have the money to blow on top notch ones then go that way because you get what you pay for ya know

5mm neoprene in the summer time is not just super hot, it's unbearable. Neoprene is not as warm as one may assume due to its thickness. Because it is not breathable, sweat accumulates overtime inside the waders. Moisture leads to cold feet. Breathable waders are not as expensive as they used to be. Cheaper models are now widely available. They allow you to move around due to the lack of constriction and better fit. You also wouldn't look like you're giving birth at the end of the day when you're trying to pull them off your body. "You get what you pay for" is certainly very true when it comes to waders. You can find breathable waders from reputable brands from $150 ~ $200.

Breathable, hands down.  Best waders money can buy are Simms, no question.  If that's out of your price range, drive to Olympia, Wa and buy a pair of cabela's brand waders.  Very well built and really affordable.  You'll save a boat load of cash buying them in Washington over BC.  I understand the buying local thing, but it's just too difficult to abide by that when you're paying 30-40% more for something.

its funny you mention Cabelas Bentrod. I actually bought a set of their most expensive Cabelas brand breathables. I was already ordering some featherlite wading boots and a few other things  so i figured " i have had bad luck with waders why not try these" they have not leaked at all so far after many trips and even a couple of wipeouts  right now they are my go to pair and my Simms are my backups (feet leaked after 3months but warrantied)

i didnt drive to WA however i used a U.S. postal service and just drove across into Sumas, WA and picked up my stuff, paid the taxes for my purchase and i was on my way

it does cost to pick up however its very minimal. my order cost me $3 U.S.

have fun shopping for waders, its both frustrating and fun. MAKE SURE YOU TRY THEM ON or at least at stores where you can LOL

Breathable, hands down.  Best waders money can buy are Simms, no question. 

Thats an opinion. Their are many quality waders out there that wont break the bank like Simms. Snowbee have some great waders that also have a full zipper down the front. I have a pair of William Joseph Drynamics that are awesome. Two seasons now and not a single leak and very comfortable.

Bought my first pair of Simms breathables 2seasons ago,best pair Ive ever owned.

I made my purchase from one of the merchants at the Abbotsford outdoor show.

boots and "last years" waders for a very fair price.

I think that show is in March,if you can wait.

I will be purchasing a new pair of waders soon also, Im thinking maybe the simms freestones, or bear blackwaters? If anyone else is looking to buy a new pair of breathable, maybe we could buy a bunch at once and save $$$

Bare Blackwaters are the worst breathables on the market.

Iv heard that from others too, but they have one of the best warrentys on the market. They are located in burnaby, so youll be back in business in no time.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the simms Freestones, and the Simms L2 stockingfoot? Which out of the two would you get? why is there such a big bump in price for the G3 and G4? there double the price!

You will see the difference there.  I have several hundred hours in my waders hiking, deep wading, behind the sticks in a drift boat and have never had any issues.  Two reasons I initially bought my waders were testimony from fellow guide friends and a huge selection of sizes.  Really difficult to find small feet with large chest and relatively short legs.
