Chilliwack Hatchery

I was ythinking to take a run up there tomorrow morning with the family, is there fish to view ?

If you see a hatchery staff member ask them if they still transport the adult steelhead back to the lower river once they make it to the hatchery. Id like to know... thanks

That is a rumor that is heard every year and this does not happen. Anyway to my knowledge very few steelhead come into the hatchery channel.

So Chris, How come there will be up to 30-50 fish in there in April, and the next day there will be only 3-4? They do not use these for brood stock. I think you should check your sources of information better. They may not always release them down low but they are recycled.
Please phone the Chilliwack River Hatchery at 604-858 - 7227 tomorrow and relay to us the information they give you.

I will and can always stand corrected.

Die-Hard,

Please do call the hatchery and then apologize to Chris.  As far as I know, he has the best contacts on the river...  I believe that when they open the top gate, the fish can move up into a channel that is not accessible to visitors, this could explain why you would see a group of fish one day but not the next...

5-6 years ago they did truck a few loads down to try it out.. Was there when they dumped them out at train bridge.  Do not how ever think that it is an ongoing thing.

We were at the hatchery on Sat. Quite a few Coho and a lot of jacks there right now.

I was at the hatchery a week ago and yes a bunch of near done coho are still there and can be seen. Didn't see any steelhead there though, they're still in the river.

    Adult marked steelhead are not routinely transported to the lower river to make a second run for angler opportunity. These fish generally start to show up at the hatchery
mid to late March and are very close to spawning. We have on two or three occasions transported fish to the lower river. This was done in the hope that these fish would
find alternate areas to spawn other than the hatchery outlet. A number of fish were tagged with floy tags , released  at the BC hydro bridge and showed up two days later at the hatchery.
Our coho releases start mid May and at that time our diversion fence is opened and any steelhead below the fence move upstream out of the view of most anglers.
    On another note steelhead brood collection has been slow. As of Jan. 23 we have collected seven fish. This compares to between 15- 20 fish during the same time frame for
past years.

i've seen and heard of ALOT of wild fish this year, but only a few of good size
