The early mornings beautiful colours, signalling another days birth are just beginning to show behind the mountains as I make my way
through a frost covered forest. Looking again at the sunrise as I walk I smile at it attempts to decieve me into thinking all is warm and
soft. It is not. It is a chilly morning and I knew it would be and have dressed appropriately for the dance. I am at mid-river and as I arrive to my spot there is already one other angler fishing and upon asking am told, nothing so far. I quickly suit up and start with a dime sized roe sack and lightly toss it into the river, hopeful that today will be the day. The other fellow and myself exchange knowing smiles at how lucky we are to be here as we watch a large bald eagle lift off from the other side and with huge wings slicing into the air glide to where only eagles dare to fly. There are no other anglers and as the one fellow heads downstream I decide to try higher up. The usual assortment of goods are brought out by me, inspected and used but to no avail. Roe sacks, shrimp, spring roe and even wool with a single egg are not enough to elicit a response from any fish nearby. It has been a bit over two hours and with no hellos I decide to head back to my waiting wheels and move higher up. I fish around the Tamahi area for the next three hours and although visibility isn't great, about one and a half to two ft. its water I've caught them in before and good enough. Only one other fisherman out over that time period, fishing with his beautiful lab pup across from me and although we both moved up and down the river in tandem, in some unspoken dance there was no reward for our efforts forthcoming. So as I had fished some very fishy water with no results and was now getting a little hungry I decide to call it a day and begin again on Derby Day. Water was low where I was and short floating was the order of the day and even then I managed to lose two hookups. Still its always nice to be out while most others are working and now I know why Chris is so happy all the time. Sorry I could'nt of got my first of the year but maybe its just not my time yet. Perhaps on Derby Day. Good Fishing All.
