Chilliwack River, February 23rd 2009
« on: February 23, 2009, 07:26:50 PM »

Having the day off work I decided to head out to Chilliwack for the 4th time this season in hopes of my first steelhead.

Arrived at a spot up river shortly after 8 am, water was up a little bit with the rain last night and it had a nice colour to it. A few casts into the day and my float went down and for a split second my heart raced as I thought it was finally my time. Well a couple head shakes later I realize it wasnt a steelhead but a nice sized rainbow. After that I continued to pound some nice looking water but came up empty handed.

Around 2pm we decide to head mid river and check things out. As I am walking down the trail I run into another forum member who tells me that he has been into five hatchery fish! Well this certainly gets my blood pumping again and I start to forget about my sore legs and wet upper body from a short dip I took in the upper river.

As I crawl down the rocks and scope out a nice looking piece of water I notice that I have a nasty looking knot on my leader halfway between my hook and swivel. My fishing partner is tired so she agrees to rig my up another pink worm, as she does this I start making casts. Third cast and the float goes under fast! Thinking that its a snag I pull hard and much to my disbelief the fish pulls back. Finally its game on! The fish is big and it goes down river, then comes back up river jumps a few times then I start guiding into a nice area to land it. It was right up to the shore and I see that its a hatchery doe around 15lbs. Then the fish gives a couple more head shakes and the line goes slack, I reel in and notice my leader has snapped right were the wind knot was. So let this be a lesson to any lazy anglers out there like myself.  CHECK YOUR LEADERS!

Rain started around 5 when we were leaving, Im hoping it doesnt come down too hard as it seems there has been a fair amount of fish moving in the last few days.

Here are a couple random shots from the day.

My 3rd time to the Vedder got in a good hike.  I was fishing below KW bridge, swarms of people there = spooked fish. Get there really early if you want to dog a spot. :)

I love those rapids. Thanks Lucky for the report. Too bad your fish got away. But any experience in hooking and fighting a beast is worth the trip.  If the member caught 5 hatchs, fishing is not that bad at all. The river will be crowded again.  ;D

Hey Lucky, (i mean unlucky) thanks for the report and pics, sorry you didn't get that steelie. Thats happened to me a couple times with the knot thingy, just lucky I didn't catch one at that time or I probably would of lost it. Pretty cool to meet someone who was into five hatches and got them in close enough to see they were hatcheries. Wonder if he landed any. Pretty heartbreaking to lose five steelhead in a row right at your feet but it must certainly be great to hook them. Thanks for the report.

Just because you have a pin rod doesnt mean you know how to fish it.....

That knot will now haunt you for many years. ;) Too bad. There'll be many more chances this season hopefully. :)
