Recomedations for Pike fly rod
« on: February 22, 2009, 11:32:32 PM »

yo,

So, supposedly at Toronto Islands there are places to fish for Pike near shore in the spring

any suggestions for a good pike rod?

ideally, I want a rod that I can use on salmon as well (Cohos/pinks)

and I would want a 4pc so I can transport it easily.

also, anyone know of good dry flies for pike?

thanks

I use an 8wt, mainly because the flies are huge.

This fellow is a bit of a pike on the fly expert...  I have tried it, and its pretty fun.

Good luck.

You don't need a wire leader, but it will definitely save you from losing flies left and right. I caught a few pike on mono but their sharp teeth can quickly do a number.

Try using a section of braided line rather than the wire leader. I've found it to work quite well against those toothy critters.

Wire or braided, just don't bother with mono unless you like losing flies.

I have started using jigs (1/0) and have had phenomenal hooking success.  Much better than treble hooks and way better than doubles.

Try the Sage Flight in an 8 weight.  The rod is around $400, but almost casts as well as Sage's premium rods that run twice as much.
