Chilliwack River, March 28th 2009
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:33:40 PM »

Well, I finally got back out to the river - first time since mid October.   Sure a lot of changes out there, I was surprised to see first hand all the slides that happened last November - especially that field at Wilson Road.  WOW!!

Quite cold till mid-afternoon - almost snow.  Very few fishers out today - lots of runs to ourselves or just one other person there.  Water was higher than I've experienced in march of previous years.   Started at the Washout just above Allison Pool.  Rob worked through that with roe, I was using single egg with white wool.  Nada!    Next stop Cedar from the south side - same success.  Then to the runs behind the Corrections Camp runs.  Worked through most of those, even forged the channels and worked the runds all the way to the back. Nothing on the line there either.  Saw no fishers at Tamahai jus a few kayakers.  Only one vehicle at Wilson Road / Gun Barrel.  Next down to Tesky's Rock area, couldn't find anywhere in there where you could actually land a fish if you caught one.  Then home.  Seems that Rob & I are doing a great job of protecting Steelhead.

Water was absolutely clear up at the Prison Run,  nicely coloured below Thurston Meadows,  only about 18" down at Tesky's.

Just being out there and getting fresh ait was good for me.  WAY better than being here in the home office hatching a chair and working on mortgage files.  Hope to try the lower tomorrow.

Saw quite a few fry in the shallows and quiet water.  I was surprised to see dead onles every few feet.  picked some of them up and each seemed to have a tiny wound in the side of the body.  anyone know what causes that?

Had Sat.off so I decided tie up some fresh roe and head out even though the weather was pretty poor.Truth is I just bought a used truck and was itching to try it out on some 4x4 roads.First stop in the driving rain and wind was just above Allison.Water was the best I have seen it looking this year.No fish for me here but had a couple of honey holes and first class runs all to myself.Probably the weather and the lateness of the season? The trees protected me somewhat as well as some new raingear I recently acquired so it wasn't too bad and the experience was actually mildly pleasurable.
Back down river to the train bridge area.Wind and rain were off and on but the pressure was still light. The slides above Tamahi were leaching lots of clay so visibility not as good as upriver but still better than most times this year I have been out.No fish for me or my buddy Keith but seeing signs of fry and small fish appearing. As things warm up I think fish activity is going to as well. The weather finally drove us off around 6 and as the sky cleared we could see a line of fresh snow on the hills above no doubt this was what made the wind so chilly.Oh yea the new old truck was fine.It was time as the older won has 450,00+ k's.

thanks for the report, I fished hard yesterday as well, saw 5 fish hooked and 4 landed within the first hour of being there and then nothing for the rest of the day.

I agree it's been a little chilly up there still lately, but it wouldn't still feel like steely season if it wasn't ,at least to me anyways. So how does one get 450.000+ k out of a truck,I've worn out a couple vehicles at around the 330 mark, and am running Mobil 1 synthetic in my b3000 hoping for better results I'm at 216 now and fairly maintenance free.Any tips?

i think it all depends on how you treat your vehicle. a customer at my mill sold his Dakota that had over 500,000km's and was still going like it was new. I sold my dakota with around 280,000 on it and it would be going strong still except my little sister forgot to change the oil before it dropped to 40 below and it looks to be siezed up now  :( (she should have listened)
