Chilliwack River, March 27th 2009: Victim to a Jig
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:49:18 PM »

To start things off, I arrived at the river around 1 p.m. and talked to some guys who had been fishing since first light with nothing to show for it. :( I was pretty confident that some new fish would have moved in with the days high tide so I started fishing with a few different prawn tipped jigs. About an hour or so into fishing I switch over to the "nightmare jig"  :o which I've had some luck with (white head, red collar, and black tail). I had been working a nice deep seam for quite some time so I decided to cover a bit of the tail out with an extra long drift. Float disappears!! Thinking its just bottom I still strike hard, good hook set and the fight is on!, quickly making my way down river to get parallel to it, I give a few more tugs to be sure that my hook is not going anywhere. As the fish nears shore it comes dangerously close to a nasty snag, so I step out into the water and work on keeping the fish out of the snag....a few head shakes, and my rod straightens out :'( reeling in the slack all i see is my nightmare jig with a hook that I am now thinking is to freaking small for a jig hook. That is the second fish i've lost on aero jig's gammie hooks and everyone keeps telling me they are too small. I am stoked but bummed, from what I saw, and felt this was the biggest fish of the season for me (16+).

My adrenaline is pumping and I fish for another 45 min or so with a Bent Rod jig, pink and black, think its called "plan b", anyways another guy who saw me hook the first one, has joined me and we are fishing this seam, hoping for a fresh aggressive steelie to hammer what we are putting out there. Float is bobbing along like a float should and then it does this really beautiful thing, that is comparable to......things of pleasure...it disappears! when you know your depth is right and your float goes down...its hard to beat that feeling ;D. Fish on, crazy head shakes, the guy to my left is trying to get his gear in, I am reeling in as fast as I can trying to keep up with the fish and like a bad dream my rod starts to straighten out.... again! ::) I keep reeling in and the bend comes back..still on!! I start playing this fish which for the next 10 min. puts up a very spirited fight.  I finally get it close enough to see that it's a hatchery doe, super clean, no color, and translucent fins. Soooo I surf her up onto the beach and dispatch her. Some other buddies came by just as I landed the fish and weighed her for me, 12.25 # doe.

So it was a good day on the river, another guy who walked by when I landed my fish, came walking back with a 7# hatchery no more than 15 minutes later when I was cleaning my fish. First cast he broke off a larger fish and next cast bonked the little guy. I was also checked by a CO when I got back to my vehicle all was good and he sent me on my way. peace
