Just got back from a week of fishing the roche area,i had been anticipating this trip for a while in hopes of some great fly fishing.the first couple of days was great ,the weather was perfect and the water temp was around 57,after figuring out what food source the fish were keying on and at what depth the action was pretty good for the better part of two days, but day three brought high winds and kept me off the water for the day,the next several days the weather turned several degrees colder and the water temp was down to 48,the fishing did slow but there was still enough action to keep me busy ,i just had to work a little harder at finding  willing fish, most of my fish were caught on a black and red ribbed snow cone chronomid,at times the chironomid hatch was insane out there my pontoon was covered with hundreds of the little creatures, after pumping several fish they were all just full of chronies and not much else, all of the fish were caught in less than 10 feet of water with my fly hanging around 4 feet below my indicator, even though it would of been nice to have a little more consistent fishing it was still pretty good,i guess thats typical for it to be off and on this time of year ,especially with the unpedictable weather patterns.i have a few pics to post but they are not of the best quality due to my inability to multi task and handle the fish as little as possible before release except the last two ,they were for the frying pan.

Thanks for the detailed report searun17.I've never been to Roche but am going June 6 weekend to try my luck, hopfully I can dial in a few of the triploids stocked there[never caught any before cause I usually avoid the busy lakes they're in]
I've got a feeling it's going to be a bit more crowded than usual cause it's a company derby weekend that I;m going to ;D

There is also a fish in from another site so the lake will be packed.

Good job on the fish buddy. I wish I could of joined you but with this back of mine I will not be doing much of anything for awhile especially if they go threw with surgery. At least you sent some pics and a fishing report every couple of days.

roche lake is a big lake and while i was there this past week it was quite busy as well with the woolly buggers fishin happenning, there are plenty of ares you can escape to and catch fish, the area that i fished for the most part i had very little company and still did pretty good.i hope you have a great time.

Thanks for the report and nice fish pics!

Roche will be packed this weekend for sure Fish In's and derbies won't make much difference the lake is a gong show and will be packed every weekend.

Busy lakes can be good for the new angler. you can watch guys to see what is working and then pick their brains in the campsite over a brewsky after. Great way to watch and learn from the better rods.

Also busy lakes take the pressure off of other lakes, sacrificial lambs you might say,  so it is all good in my books  :)

I got back Monday from the S.D#37 maintenance department fishing derby on Roche lake and I know I should of started a new thread, but thanks to searun17 and a few others I had plenty of information to go with.
I went up Thursday after having breakfast in Bridal Falls with the plumber and groundskeeper we arrived at the lake about noon. There were several campers set up in the forestry site but there was ample room to set up near the lakeshore, after chatting with the neighbors and waiting for the wind to die down a bit I finally got on the water and headed for the other end of the lake.I only managed a couple fish Thursday night on a olive green black bead head chronie, and only seen a few others caught in the 2 pound range.
Friday was a write off, at least for me anyway,I went to chronimid alley at the crack of 9:30 am to see allready a dozen or more boats allready parked.I set my 2 anchors and cast my line and watched and waited and listened and waited and learned.[apparently I don't know as much about chronie fishing as I thought I did].I got skunked, but I did learn what I was doing wrong.I went back to camp and cut off my 14 feet of 7 lb leader and retied on 24 feet of 5 lb.the fish were being caught in 18 to 22 feet of water.
Saturday was the start of the derby and I headed out at 10 am to the other end of the lake to see about 30 boats allready  parked I set my 2 anchors and cast out my chronie down to the 20 foot mark.It didn't take long and by 11 am I already had released 2 fish in the 3 pound range.Several people released much larger ones and more frequently too.At about 11:30 I hooked into a decent fish in the 4 pound range it took several minutes to land and didn't really fit in the net  , figured I better dispatch her, after all I was in a fishing derby.I took her back to weigh her in ,she scaled at 4.4 pounds ,no monster but large enough to win first place.
