Reasonable trout reel suggestions?
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:30:24 PM »

Do you guys have any favorite affordable trout reels? lets say in the 5 wt range.  (I had a System 1 go overboard last week).

I don't need a disc drag but would prefer something that has enough drag on its own not to birdsnest if a trout hits hard and fast.

The cheap dragonfly reels seem a little flimsy and unbalanced to me.

Any suggestions?

cheers

Lamson would be a good choice.  Well made, relatively affordable and has drag system.

I still use the old LP series reels.  They are great but really hard to find now.  Anyone have any experience with the current lamsons, like the Konic series?

Amundson makes a real good reel for the price, cork drag. I was hitting #10 trout that were peeling line off the reel so fast that it screamed and I didn't have a single issue what so ever. Never had to adjust or anything.

I highly rate my amundson reel as very good.

I have only had it for a few months, but it has seen 30 days of fighting lots of BIG trout.

I've had cheaper reels and feel that that is money well wasted. The reel does more than "hold" line. It must have a good drag so I can pull out line very fast with out free spooling and when big fish hit, HOLD ON as they will put your drag to the test.

Oh ya mine is silent, unlike those garbage clicker reels.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Is your reel silent out of the box or did you have to 'modify' it??

I too love silent reels.

Those sages do look nice but I was hoping for something a little cheaper.

Comes silent due to the cork drag system.

Have a look at Loop. They have some composite reels that are great and not too expensive
