if you lay your rod flat on the ground then its your stupidity that caused it to get stepped on. I mean you should NEVER lay your rod on the ground !!! its just looking for trouble with all the feet around during the sockeye madness. I mean honestly how often do you watch where your feet are when fishing?? most of us are watching the action and seeing who is hooking up or fighting fish and whatever other things might be going on....

I agree it is the responsibility of the angler to keep his/her rod out of harms way;  don't lay it down flat near the shore where people are going to be playing fish as that is just asking for it to get stepped on.

My uncle told me many years ago.
Never lay your rod on the ground.

This must be one of the top ten rules of fishing.

Another question: how close is too close?  My friend had someone come up and stand a few feet away from him and start casting.  Is there a 'buffer zone' of at least 10-15 feet?

10-15ft?  Hah!  About 3-4 when things are busy.  If it's a skilled group, you can almost pass a cup between fishermen and not have to move

I think that if you leave your rod sitting on a crowded beach it gets stepped on, it's your fault. Personal responsibility.
I agree with DragonSpeed, you can fish a few feet apart if everyone knows how it works. But it only takes one to mess it up with a short or miss timed cast. BBing fishing is a easy thing to do but learning to cast at the right time can be the hardest part. It's even better when you are trying to fish from a boat and have anchor lines to deal with.

I think you should try to stay in sync (not the band) with the guys below you. If everybody would cast after the person below them, the line crossing would almost be eliminated.

7. When possible try and time your cast with the person downstream (let them cast first) of you or cast at a time when your line cannot crossover theirs.  Don't cast over top of the person upstream of you this will just result in getting tangled and it will affect the response in both rods.
