Switch rods?
« on: September 02, 2009, 08:53:41 AM »

Hi, fellow fly fishermen, I had been a long time spey fishermen, using mostly traditional lines and has recently starting using mid belly lines a few years ago. I am thinking of adding a switch rod to my collections for using in smaller waters and wonder if any hardcore spey chuckers here has make that switch. Your opinions on pros and cons of the switch rod compare to spey, any tips, pointers in rod selection would be appreciated.

I rarely use the long rods anymore. I have switch rods made by Beulah, TFO, and Sage and am happy with all of them. They do cast a few feet shorter than the long rods do but the ease of casting, ability to one hand when needed, and they are much easier on the arms and shoulders after a long day on the flow. To me the benefits out weigh the disadvantages.

wolverine:

Thanks for your reply, I went and order a couple of Rainshadow switch blanks as start. Hopefully will have the 8wt build before the steelhead season starts.

And line of choice you could recommend to start with??

Cheers
