Boating up Pitt Lake
« on: August 25, 2009, 09:49:34 PM »

Hello Everyone,

I realize that this topic is probably WAY too exhausted, but I figured I'd try my own post.  I did a little research on the board and didn't find much about boating Pitt Lake.  There is lots of talk about boating up Pitt River, but what I'm curious about is Pitt Lake.

I've done numerous canoe trips across Pitt Lake (just the entrance of the lake to the canals) to Widgeon creek and thats never really that bad.

I was planning on heading up to the north end of Pitt Lake to the river and try some fishing.  I have a 12' aluminum with an 18hp motor.  I'm quite cautious (I do regular trips up Indian Arm without problems) and I figure I should be able to make it to the north end of Pitt Lake without any problems.  Of course I'll keep an eye out for deadheads and if there is any change in weather I'll head for shore or straight back ASAP.

I have no intentions of boating up the river, I'd actually like to take my mountainbike with me and head up the road with my gear.  I've read about a few people doing that and it seems like alot of fun.

I have seen the ad on the billboard for the water taxi, which might be an option.  But i don't know if i can get enough people together with bikes to make that boat trip worthy.  So, maybe me and a buddy will pack our bikes into my boat and try to head up.

Any thoughts on Pitt Lake with my 12' aluminum?

Thanks in advance,

-rob C

Pitt has incredible potential for wild conditions.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBEXxYKEkg8 This isn't my video but I HAVE been out on the lake when the conditions were similar, in a 20 footer with twin 90's. Pretty hairy! That said, many people canoe and kayak the lake regularly. My advice would be to try it. Just make sure someone knows your plans and be prepared to take an extra day if neccessary.

The Wind is goind to be a factor in the afternoon, it will come up around 1 pm, and blow pretty good until dinnerish. It makes some really nasty waves at the north end as the wind funnels through. I have an 18' and I can say first hand I dont think I would go up there in a 12', unless i was going to come back down before 12pm. You could wait out the wind, but no guarentee the wind will drop before sun down.

imho

12 foot and 18 horse is only on a wide boat. Taken a canoe up there. Morning and late evening are your travel times during the summer. Put your bike in the boat. Tidal lake so moor appropriately.
