maui pics
« on: August 28, 2009, 02:48:45 PM »

spent a month in maui and got a dozen fishing days in.

here are a couple of fishing pics.

first picture is a small ulua or giant trevally known by the locals as a papio

the second is a small mahi mahi caught on light tackle.

the next is a picture of some fresh ahi tuna sashimi mixed with nuts and sea weed called hawaiin poke - good stuff.

the ulua was given to a local. i tried to catch and release but it washed up on shore later so i gave it away.

i took some bar rigs with me. most guys rig up their own system using a bottom weight with one hook coming off the main. you are allowed to fish with two barbless hooks.

you can also catch these fish by fly fishing, live bait with a float and lures.

many use soft plastics and jigging techniques.

these fish get up to 200 lbs.

Mahi Mahi is excellent table fare, white meat very much like cod, also dined on Wahoo, which was very tasty when I was in Maui.Booked a shared charter for offshore Marlin Fishing but was not lucky on that trip, saw some nice Mahi Mahi or Dorado also known as the Dolpin fish while on the Docks!
