Hey guys,

I was wondering what length my leader should be when float fishing for trout, I've been using ones that are about 18 inches give or take a bit. Also, I use clip on floats that have a weight on the bottom of it, so it necessary to have a small sliding weight on my main line before the leader like I usually use or would it be better without it?

all depends on what depth you want some times you need your bait 5 ft down. Have to play around.

I agree, usually when the water is warmer the trout will hold deeper. However, when it is colder, or early morning and late evenings they tend to sit higher in the water (at least in my experience). Right now on most local lakes I would try fairly close to the bottom if possible until we get some colder weather.

I'm fishing in a river, from my past experiences there the 18 inch leader seemed to work alright, I set my clip-on bobber high on the main line so the bait was roughly 4 ft down.Wish I could tell the depth of this particular place to get an idea of how deep my bait should be ideally. I'm guessing it's about 10ft or less
