  • We need longer weekends...when fishing is good
Brownsville Bar - Train Crossing
« on: September 11, 2009, 03:16:11 PM »

I took my 6 year old son and his friend to fishing last night to Brownsville Bar in Surrey. We had a wonderful evening and my son caught his first salmon ever. It was about 7:45 that we decided to leave. We went to the parking lot and put the stuff in the car, I backed up and I was going to exit the parkin lot right at the train track where I heard a long train horn and all of a sudden BANG... :-X  The front part of my car was hit by a train and our car was pushed to the very north side of the lot. Thanks god no one was seriously injured and we're still alive but my car is comletely damaged but with 2 kids in the car, it could have been worse...

2 things to pay attention when you go there esp in the dusk:

1- There is no flashing lights/gates or signals at the entrance of the parking. The X sign is broken to half and is not visible to the drivers and my vision was also blocked by a truck parked on my left hand side. So, I didn't even see the train coming down... Be very careful when walking/driving over that rail track since there's no sign over there.

2- It's a very busy area around this time of the year and many people, cyclists and pedestrians visit the park for fishing or enjoying a day by the river. I really don't want this to happen to anybody so to me it's more of a public safety issue. Have your eyes on your kids/dogs when you go over there.

Enjoy your warm weekend and tight lines.

Good reminder. I know a colleague that was killed at a railway crossing years ago on the Canada Day weekend. Still think of her.

Thats crazy, I would think they would have to repair that sign or put in some flashing lights soon, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I was fishing around fort Langley the other day and saw the opposite problem, there was people lined up at a railway crossing with the arms down and no train in sight. They were still down when I passed by two hours later.

Glad to hear nobody was hurt and perhaps a lesson was learned, although replacing signs may be a good idea common sense is an ever better idea. I'm sure he crossed the tracks coming in so he knew he would cross them leaving. One wouldn't proceed through a blind intersection without edging out and looking both ways, the same should have been done in this case if the other vehicles were blocking your view.

Also glad to hear nobody was hurt.....Must have been terrifying.

Remember, Anytime is train time, and in a battle between a car and a train the train ALWAYS wins.

Glad everyone is ok.  Your son will have a great fishing story about his first salmon when he grows up.
