Hi,
I'm new to the site.  I've been fishing the Chilliwack/Vedder for about 10 years now.

I average about 13 days on the river every fall for salmon fishing.

I've seen quit a few and hooked 4-12 a day myself between the canal and the RR bridge.
as of Monday most of them were starting to look a bit dark.

is it my imagination or do the springs seem to be significantly larger this year than last.

Going to be on the river again tomorrow, hope the rain has moved some fresh fish in.

Honestly, this year I have seen more Spring Jacks then I have ever seen on the Chilliwack/Vedder. That should be an indication of a good run of adults for next year.

To date, the hatchery has around 2,000 chinook jacks, which is indeed a good indication of next year's chinook salmon run. The amount of coho jacks at the hatchery is also quite high, also another good indication. The hatchery only has half of the amount of adult chinook salmon compared to last year right now, but that is mostly due to the low water level. This shall change in the next few days.

is it my imagination or do the springs seem to be significantly larger this year than last.

The differences in average size of chinook salmon that you see each year is due to the year class that the run is from. Some runs are 4 year olds while others are 5 year olds. The extra year means an extra 10 to 20lb.

lots of jacks is a good thing, since they are a younger year class that come back with the older adults. Should be a good spring run next season.

i figure that water levels should be dropping by sunday afternoon so some new fresh fish will move into the system. as for the jack situation, more fish the happier people and DFO is ;D

Vedder spring returns have been good for the past couple of years.
Good thing.
Probably a result of all the hard work hatchery folks are doing.
I remember this being said last year too.

Nature has it that certain percentage one year's population will return home one year early.
If that percantage is more or less steady,
the more jacks in the river the bigger the survival rate of the entire generation, which means next year more fish will return home.
Numbers game.

Not quite blood red, right?
It's probably a marble.
