What is a coho jack are they going up river to spawn?

In short, the answer to your questions......  A jack is a 2 year old male that returns to the river to spawn.  And yes, they die after spawning.  It's nature's way of mixing up the gene pool.  Because they're only 2 years old, they're small - coho jacks are around 12 - 16 inches long.  Here's a photo to compare jacks with adult fish:

Are there only Coho Jacks or are there "Jacks" in other sepcies as well?

there is spring jacks too both whites and reds
im not sure about the other species

there are also "Jills" which are like the jacks but female instead of male. I have only ever caught jills on the Norrish river though and only 2 so far over the years. almost 100% will be jacks

We'll they're not just going to watch .  They're reproductive strategy differs from adults, as they cannot fend off other males due to their diminutive size.  They employ a strategy called the "sneaky F____er" strategy (laugh away, but that was coined by one of the leading evolutionary biologist John Maynard Smith).  While the adult males are fending off other males, the jack sneaks in a releases his sperm beside the gravid female.  Apparently, its actually quite an effective technique.  Employed all across the spectrum of species. In humans, its the guy who thinks rugby is barbaric, prefers coolers, likes Meg Ryan movies, can tell the difference between lavender and mauve and still gets girls because guys dismiss him as not being a threat.
