Could anyone recommend a good place to get a reel cleaned up and serviced?

Not a bad idea to get familiar with your own reel.  Easier on a lit desk then at dawn on a frozen Jan day in the sleet.  Abus and Penns are easy, never worked on any other level winds, but I hear you'd better be a heart surgeon to work on a Calcutta.

calcutta is not that hard either and mikes had all the schemtics on it if you need them

Mike's reel repair does good work but they are awfully slow. I sent one of my reels to get repaired earlier this summer. After waiting for ten weeks I had the tackle shop call them and had it sent back. Not impressed.

Interesting.  I've heard the Calcutta was not the kind of reel you'd take apart on a river bank, but as i said, i've never worked on them.  People have told me diffs were hard to work on too, but they aren't too bad, so it goes to show that it depends on the mechanical aptitude individual to a large extent.

if you take it apart slowly piece by piece and lay it out on a table the way it goes back together you should be ok but here is a big but if your anti reverse bearing is blown then your in trouble the first time i took mine apart and it was blown i had freaking ball bearing pieces everywhere was a pain in the butt to put back together


as for mike being slow that is why i took the chance to clean my own hes so so so slow

but his website does have great schematics on it very very helpful when you put things back together

Go to Mikes reel repair they are the best. When and if you do take your reel in for service give your self enough time to have worked on and don't take in just before the season open's. Because thats what everyone else dose then they get mad when they get told they have to wait a couple of weeks before their reel is done.

I always use Mikes Reel Repair he is a nice guy and does an excellent job.  I have a backup reel for when mine is in the shop and I usually try to wait until the end of the season before getting it serviced anyways.  Ask him about upgrades...

If you are in the Vancouver area...

For Shimano reels, take them directly to Deep Blue in Surrey (800-10281 Grace Road) as they are the authorized distributor and service centre.

For Abu Garcia, Mitchell reels, take them to Russ at Stryker Rods as he is the authorized warranty/service centre.

If you want it done right go to Mikes Reel Repair.  I have not tried Stryker but don't waste your time with Deep Blue, unless it is a warranty repair then I would make sure they get it right until you are satisfied.
