hope river slough
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:54:31 PM »

I took a float down the hope river slough last weekend. This use to be prime salmon spawning grounds which also made it prime cutthroat water I heard it was a slow mellow  slough the whole way and it was for the first 1 km was quit nice lots of birds and squirels living neer the water.I had planned on going back up stream with my electric but soon I realized that wasnt going to happen the current picked up and turn into a swift moving stream I had to pull my motor up and let the current take me.I realizied I should make other plans to get back to my truck so I called my father who had backed out of the trip saying mabey it was better off if I scouted it out first after arrguing with him that his old maps from the early  70s werent going to show a way out he finally gave in to technology and looked at google eart and told me to drift down another km or so were there was a place I should be able to get out .Knowing I had plenty of time before the rescue I stopped on a small beach section that had some fishy looking water in it and casted a single egg pattern on my 4 weight I had been trolling this most of the way down no sign of fish though I continued my drift down stream soon it widened out and became a slow calm drift which was nice for practicing my casting.I saw many things along the way some of them extremely disturbing. We all know about the decline in salmon stocks due to loss of habitat. This slough is a prime example of that.the good news is it can always be revived. As me and my father were loading my tin can into his truck an old man living near drove up and asked how the fishing was I was sorry to say it was horrible which he replied to bad it used to be realy good .Those words spoken all to often these days.Ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

Thanks for the report and pictures even as bad a some of them are. It would be a good idea to report to the Chilliwack FOC office the location of the net just to get it out of the stream bed if nothing else.

All too common.  Wade down almost any lower mainland stream/creek that runs through agricultural land and at some point you will find oil slicks running into the water.

I've fished it twice (in different places) and caught fish both times.  Only one pic though:
