Can you blame the people for being paranoid after the innuendos about possible terrorist attacks that maybe could happen during the Olympics. It seems we get as paranoid as the Americans, seeing a terrorist behind every tree and a bomb in every shopping bag. Got to laugh about the police though, one would think the imbeciles would have first bothered to find out what's in the tube. If it weren't so pathetic I could laugh about this incident.

Imbeciles?  I know that you are entitled to an opinion, however is it too much to ask that it be an informed one?

Love these armchair experts who have a major in security, with a double minor in bomb disposal and emergeny response, read one short article online (maybe watch news story on TV), jump to conclusions how THEY would have responded to it instead, and are quick to name call those who are on the ground facing the situtation. Yep, you have all the facts dude.

Throwing out "imbecile" based upon a one dimensional view from your computer screen shines the same light back on yourself.

For your information before I moved to Canada I was in the Swiss Army trained in terrorist combat which also included dealing with bombs and bomb threats, guarding public events and as a sniper, among other special training. During that time I have dealt with my fair share of bombs and perceived bomb threats. We never went just in and blew things up on mere suspicion. That was during the time of the German Baader-Meinhof and the Irish (IRA) Terrorists, that unlike Al-Quaida, were a very real every day present threat to our lives in Europe. Armchair Expert! I don't think so.

I'd consider it a good training exercise and call it a day.  I'm sure the police felt relief rather than stupidity after finding out it was just a fishing rod.

Considering I have seen more than a few of the short rod home-made rod tubes (PVC or ABS) that look like huge pipe bombs, I don't think it is an overreaction and I don't think it would be wise to be unscrewing it to see what's inside either.

Myself and another forum member here have a mutual acquaintance who blew his eye and half his face apart screwing on and end cap on a small pipe bomb in high school about 25 years back.... you don't want to be taking chances on something like that.

Respect has to be earned, it's not given simply on the merits of someone wearing a uniform or having a fancy title in front of his/her name. I am sure, knowing how to deal with such situations, that there would have been other ways to check the "container" to determine what it is without blowing it up and that would not posed any danger to the officers. We did that many times in the army and it is very safe to do. Personally though I think that this was a welcome excuse to stage a show to prove to the world that we can deal with any threatening situation.

With the right equipment you do not need to handle the device or even go close to it to find out what it is. Every bomb disposal team in the world has this equipment plus specially trained canines that can smell all kinds of explosives. These are experts not high school kinds.

Oh well, what do I know about terrorism? Nothing. What I do know is where to draw the line between criticism and insult. Imbecile would not be a word that I'd use if I want others to respect my opinion, so you're right, respect is to be earned.

When I typed my post I knew I was making an assumption about you and that there was a small outside chance that you WERE an expert. You are correct, you do certainly have the experience. I was wrong. However I still believe that public name calling without first hand knowledge of the tactical situation, and political-social environment, is irresponsible. It's ironic that there is a parallel between my calling you an Armchair Expert without having all the facts, and you calling them imbeciles without the same.

On your website you mention that one of your values is to treat others as you want to be treated. I would suggest that your initial post probably is not consistent with that value.

Cheers

Yes and they sometimes die on the job too...you don't have to search very hard to find instances of bomb defusals gone wrong.  My point was that the nature of explosives call for a "better safe than sorry" approach.  You can either blow up the rod tube and be done with it, or not blow it up, investigate it further, and hope that it doesn't blow up while you are trying to properly identify it.  Basically compensate somebody for a $300 fishing rod or potentially blow up the seabus, your team and whoever else is caught in the blast radius.  You don't have to be very smart to do that kind of math.  You say yourself they are experts, maybe you should trust their decision rather than belittle them.
