Fraser River Salmon Notice
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:55:35 PM »

Following is the Fishery Notice that the Department just released.  As many of you know discussions this spring around management of Chinook stocks has been on-going since early February.  These discussions have been challenging but did result in recommendations from the local SFAC's to not fish for salmon if the First Nations fisheries were closed.

The Department has also been consulting with First Nations around Chinook management and given our mutual concerns for these stocks there have been no weekly fishing opportunities provided.  In addition, there have only been very limited (2) ceremonial licences issued for funerals.  We are meeting regularly with Fraser First Nations to continue these discussions and should management actions change I will keep you apprised.

As stated in the notice an update will be provided in mid-May.  If you have any questions/comments please feel free to call or email me.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0323-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Fraser River Chinook Recreational Management Actions - Subareas 29-11 to 17 and those waters of the Fraser River in Region 2

The Department is implementing additional measures to protect and conserve
Fraser River Spring Chinook stocks of concern that are now entering the Fraser
River.  Additional management measures are required for commercial,
recreational and First Nation fisheries to reduce fishery exploitation rates on
these Chinook stocks.

Additional management measures are required for the recreational fishery in
Subareas 29-11 to 17 (tidal Fraser) and those waters of the Fraser River in
Region 2 (non-tidal Fraser).  Effective 00:01 hours Saturday May 1, 2010 there
is no fishing for salmon permitted.

An update will be provided on the duration of these management measures in a
subsequent fishery notice in mid May.

Sport Fishing Advisory Board representatives have been consulted on these
measures.

For more information contact your local fishery office or the lower Fraser
Recreational Fishery Manager, Debra Sneddon at 604-666-6509.
