Chilliwack River, September 27th 2010
« on: September 27, 2010, 03:41:46 PM »

All weekend long I've been battling a nasty cold so today I thought some fresh air might do a bit of good. Turns out I was wrong, I feel twice as crappy as when I left the house this morning but...... the fishing was pretty decent so that makes up for it.

Fished mid river for four hours and the water conditions were great, I brought an raincoat but should have brought sunscreen instead  8) . Hooked a few big chinook, one that was in fairly decent shape came home with me. Also had a couple coho on that were lost near the beach, I'm gonna say they were probably wild anyways  :-\ . Seems I'm a bit out of practice as I lost countless fish today because of poor hook set due to slack in my line.

Don't kid yourself, those coho were not wild. ;D ;D ;D

Nice. :) I thought some fresh air would be good for my nasty cold too, but Nina disagrees. ::)

Got to the river just after first light, decided to give lower a chance but it was just over a foot viz and high water levels. Threw some spoons at one of the gravel extraction sites hoping for a energetic early morning coho but got no action. Took a trip to the upper where i came across a nice pool all to myself :) i put on a roe and wool combo and within 10 mins i had a chrome spring jack on the line. I decided to keep it as the day looked to be uneventful. It proved to be a wise decision as i continued to throw every spoon, jig, wool and roe chunk i could for the next hour with no bites. The fish were definitely there as they would jump every so often to remind me. From what i could tell it was all spring jacks maybe a few coho. Around 1pm i decided to call it a day and make a drive passed the KW bridge for a peek down. Not many guys fishing the canal as the water is still a bit high and not many fish to be seen. That been said i did see one guy hook a big chum witch i was happy to see him release because it was snagged. An older gentlemen was fishing with the most mind-boggling  rig i have seen to date. He was using a ball of wool that you could knit a small sweater with, a pencil lead big enough to last a season ,no float and the main line had a spin n glo on it ???

I did not get an early start and fished a couple of spots around Peach Road including the Thursday hole with no success but I did see others with some. Sort of got fed up as having a hard time the last few trips even getting a good bite although the fish are around but it can be difficult getting them to take roe when they are moving in the higher flows.

After getting some chores done I went to fish the tide in the Canal area. On arrival where I parked the Leaf Mobile a truck was there but it's driver's side window was down. When I reached the area I was going to fish I asked the first angler if it was his truck and he said it was. I told him the window was down on his truck. He said he did not leave it down so he hustled back to see if someone had broken in but I had seen no broken glass on the ground.

I decided to go back and move the Leaf Mobile to a more secure spot. The chap was gone so I did not find out if some thieves had struck once again. These chaps are around as I know Gwyn's truck was hit a few days ago around the Boulder Hole, so keep your eyes open and leave little of value in your vehicles. Boy it would be nice to get these thugs that spoil our fishing trips.

I fished for an hour but even with fish moving in on the tide I had nothing to show for it, I saw a chap with a blade take a coho jack.
I decided to go for a break and take some bottles to the depot.

On the way out it was nice to meet Mike and Chris who said they had some jack action but were to finding it tough to get some adult fish to have a go at the roe they were using. They were going for some lunch and would be coming back.

I stopped at Ernie's and he gave me some fresh roe as maybe my year old roe was the problem but had not been in the past seasons.
With $36 of bottles returned, back to the Canal for the evening bite, hopefully.

I some times pack a bucket to pick up garbage in and when the old pins get tired I use it to sit on and cast away, don't laugh, one day you will be there too.
Anyway the Maple Leaf DNE dips and I set the hook hard, so hard I tumble off the bucket and only by getting my arm down it prevented me from flopping into the 2 feet of water but my arm gets soaking wet.  ::) I look round to see if anyone saw my performance.Things are going from bad to worse and most likely the strike was just a smolt anyway as there is plenty of the bait robbing chaps around.

As darkness closes in a few fish are surfacing and a couple od anglers in a boat anchored below me with connect with a good sized fish, a coho or chinook salmon. They were throwing blades.

Disgusted and cold from my near swim I head home for a fish dinner as it seems that is the closest I am getting to a fish these days, thanks for having a freezer to fish a fish out of when things are tough at the river for your truly.

Off to the river shortly, maybe a better adventure today, where is my Maple Leaf pullover? Yes that's the problem. :D

Hey Chris, it was nice to have a little chat with you after hitting a few jacks in the canal. We never did make it to cookies, although we'll hit it next time for lunch. Anyways water conditions were fantastic. Not much luck mid river but better success further down. After a late lunch we headed back to the canal where we were rewarded with another coho jack with a nice chrome spring jack. All and all an awsome day fishing.

Ps. We gotta get you a nice Canucks hat.

hmm, seems everytime Chris is around windows are down, or glass is on the ground. ::)

So Chris was that guys window really down, or did you just want him to hike back to the truck so you had the run to yourself? ;)

There were so many break-ins at the spot I used to go to that I just can't bring myself to going there anymore.... it is ridiculous.  It's a lousy feeling locking your vehicle up and rollin' the dice knowing the odds are against you.

I just try to park in high visibility areas. I keep thinking of using the bike like I see some do.

Anyone that knows the Leaf Mobile knows it would be hard for thief to find anything or sort through it and also the Leaf stuff keeps them away. ;D
