Fly fishing with spinning rod
« on: October 03, 2010, 09:14:44 PM »

I heard that it's possible to fly fish with a spinning rod. It sounds interesting so has anybody tried it?

It is not hard. it all comes down to word games. What you are talking about is using your spinning rod to fish (present) flies. Since flies are really nothing more than lures made of thread, feathers, and other assorted materials, it should be straight forward. Just deliver your fly as you would bait, or any other lure.

Too often people confuse fly casting with fly fishing. While fly casting may be the most effective method of presenting a fly, it is not fly fishing. The fishing happens when the fly is in the water.

You can toss flies under a bobber if thats what you mean, but you can't throw fly line with a spinning rod effectively.

--there have been a few different gadgets over the years to mimic fly fishing.
--note sure of the trade names... there was one like a piece of the shooting head of a fly line that you attached to end of your spin line then a leader to a dry fly.

--chironomids work well .. was thinking when cleardrift comes out with his smallest float that this may be useful for still water

--any minnow imitation which is intended to be stripped fairly fast or with a jerking motion.

--fly fishing only lake designation... angling with a line to which only an artificial fly is attached (floats, sinkers, or attracting devices man not be attached to the line when fishing is restricted to "fly fishing only"

--I realize the intent but I do get a bad smell from chironomid fishers that use a strike indicator, split shot, and now popular swivel in a so called fly fishing only lake. ..

I did it before at Buntzen Lake.
I was using my spinning reel with worm but not success and then change it to a fly and trolling, fish on in a couple minutes and got 5 - 6 trout in half an hour. ;D

Use a bubble float.  Worked wonders for me on the fraser last year for pinks when my pathetic casting couldn't reach them after they moved further out near noon.

aint no way you can effectively cast a fly line with a spinning rod. that's y companies put so much research into their rod building to make top of the line fly rods. castability is the key.
