Chilliwack River, October 13th 2010
« on: October 13, 2010, 12:51:50 PM »

Being the 13th I thought that was a reason I could not even get a bite at first light so I went and picked up some garbage for a bit, also found 3 golf balls. Actually I did not make my first cast at daylight as I tied up some roe bags to see how they would work and keep the ever present smolts at bay  I also enjoyed the last few sips of coffee along with some toast, nice being so close to the river as the toast is still warm on my arrival to my recent fishing spot. Hue-nut was busy moving around trying a few different spots. ;D

With a bag of garbage picked up including some in the river proper I slipped back out. It took a while but the bite did turn on nicely as lots of bites. I lost two good fish, type unknown. I then put on the roe bags and they worked well on jack coho anyway with several hooked and 3 hatchery landed that came home for supper. The bite was on when I left but had things to do for the Fraser River cleanup and The Paddle for next week too. Might even slip in a badminton game as well. That's before the Leaf game hits the television screen as we go for 3 straight wins to start off what will be a fabulous season for us. ;D

The fish will still be there tomorrow anyway. ;D ;D

Hey Chris! We got the same sport fishing and badminton, I think I kinda over do it this year cause 2 week ago i just tear a tendon on my right elbow and my therapist found i got Tennis elbow and have to stop badminton for half a year >:( and can not cast my 8wt so there goes my plan to go fly fishing for salmon, can still cast a bait-caster just pray it's not a 40lbs spring ;D or else i have to ask the guy beside me to land my fish. Just be careful Chris do not do to many smash  :D

Stratocaster and I gave it a go and we did OK... ;)  Ended up with 3 hatchery fish to take home.  Landed half a dozen wild fish.  Pretty good day...

Yes we did ok.  I guess the success on Friday would have been tough to match but the fishing was still fairly decent. FFM had the hot hand today.  I on the other hand went 1 for 9 on coho with most of them lost at the shore  :'(  The same headshakes, rolls and jumps that are characteristics of a coho fight proved to be my undoing today.  With #4 hooks and the sheer size of the coho's this year, my landing ratio took a beating.  On the bright side my jigs hooked 3 coho plus a couple of other salmon.  One colour combination was responsible for all the fish but unfortunately I had only tied two of those and lost both of them early on.  My other jigs did not fare so well.  Hope the run lasts a bit longer.  Its been great so far this year.

I vary it depending on visibility. Today I was around a dime and up to a nickle. The coho jack sure liked them today and if the smolts are bad it helps you have a good bait on for a while.

I must tie up some now, for tomorrow. ;D ;D

I with Stratocaster , I mainly use #4s when targeting coho but still works well if you hook a chinook or chum.

and 10lb line?

It depends on the clarity of the water but I'm usually down to #4s and 10lb fluorocarbon when it clears up.

#4 gami hooks + good size gob of roe + slower roe water = Roe takes without flossing or foulhooking

I will on occasion use #2 hooks in the morning if Im using a big gob of roe or if I am specifically targeting springs.  I will use larger hooks (#1's) when steelhead fishing with bugs.

Agreed!  Absolutely no need to try and floss these fish - they will readily take roe if presented well.  I can't even recall foul hooking a single coho when using roe.
