Trout during salmon season
« on: October 11, 2010, 08:27:44 PM »

I'm curious if trout are still fishable while the salmon season is in swing. And if so, how likely are you to catch a salmon as a byproduct? I can't imagine hooking into a large chum with my ultralight setup  :-\

--trout aggressively feed on salmon eggs so fly or plastic egg imitations work well this time of year.

--many fish the mouth of the Adam's as large trout from shuswap gather at the mouth to feed on  eggs washing down.
--also resident Adam's river trout feed on eggs plus imitations of the salmon as they develop over the year.. so egg&eye, Alvin etc. as the year progresses.

--I expect wherever there is a consentration of salmon spawning other species will be aggressively feeding on eggs and even salmon flesh imitations ... so kinda match the hatch type of fishing.. we often change the colour of eggs and flesh fly patterns as the feed changes from bright orange, pink, red eggs to washed out white grey flesh patterns.

--egg colour changes getting lighter the longer they stay in the water so we use light purple, or washed out colours of pink red and glow white.

--light gear... just be prepared to break off if you hook a salmon although expect in many areas to be getting larger trout as well so be prepared and gear up accordingly

I caught more trout than salmon while salmon fishing on the Chilliwack river a couple weeks ago.  Dolly varden and rainbow were happily eating my roe (and I was amazed that a 10" trout can fit on a size 1 hook).

Thanks guys. It'll be nice to hit the flows away from the crowds this fall. Also gives me some good chances to explore.

This blog entry from last fall is somewhat relevant to what you are asking for:
