Stave River, October 13th & 14th 2010
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:01:51 AM »

I've hit the Stave for first light last couple of days and while there are plenty of fish they seem to have a case of indifference.  I won't call it lock jaw but getting the ho's to hit has been tough.  All fishing forms were present, fly (me), one roe, and the rest spoons.  Lots of guys pounding the water but not much to show but a couple of boot chum.  It's interesting to see the colour progression of the chum.  Couple of weeks ago they were quite reasonable looking, now they're emerald green camo with some in the early stages of mold.  Lots of guys on the west side as well...  not sure where they're parking, as I did not go over to look.

I have noticed that even Chums can go off for no apparent reason.   On Monday morning the bite was quite strong between 7 and 8 am  but only on purple jigs. They didn't seem to be interested in spoons spin-glows or anything other than those jigs.  After 8am - nothing, nada.   There were lots of fish in the water but they weren't interested in anything I threw out there including jigs.   I was surprised to see the bite stop so suddenly but there is no accounting for the behavior of fish.

I was there with a friend for a while on Friday and found the same thing. Managed a few big bucks on UV pink patterns. Strange but I heard more than a few reports of this years sockeye some days) being uncooperative as well. I personally watched sockeye bat my flies out of their path when I was fishing them on the Thompson.
