Hi Guys, I am new at river fishing but I want to get into making my own Jigs and Flys. Anyways, I was wondering if you could help me out be recommending some of the tools I need to get me started out. Im not looking to spend a huge amount of money but I want good quality stuff. thanks in advance.

well i think for tying tools i think all you will need is a vise, whip finisher, scissors, bobbin (this holds the thread spool) and then some threads

I would recommend grabbing yourself a Regal knock off vise, it costs about $45 but has huge jaw strength and is easy to use. I use one for most of my tying.

Go into Army & Navy and see what they have there for sale or even Wholesale Sports should have everything you need.


Tip - get a whip finisher that spins as you use it, they make a solid one thats alot harder to use

I would start off with an entry level vice, I started tying last summer and Ive got a Snobee Fly-mate paid $45 for it and it works like a charm.

I have a Snowbee fly mate and I'm glad i only paid $20 for mine because its not nearly as good as my Regal knock off, It does rotate which is why i use it for tying intruders but thats all i use it for. Hell, i have 1 vise i use just for drying flies LOL

--It'll work and more fun than using someone Else's.
--Dip in water so you can see what it's going to do in the river then start to play. If you like the colour combos might try tying thicker or thinner depending on the profile you're trying to achieve.. some like cigar shape others more of a thin profile. Each can be used in different situations.
--Using stiffer material in the underbody to flare out or a few strands of crystal flash for more in water shine.
--Check to see if it is going to turn on the body... if it does you can start with a tighter thread wrap prior or some say cheating with a dab of glue.
--I can't really tell if you tied in the colours individual or all together and just wrapped at the head. If just wrapped at the head it will spin on the hook and feathers will pull out fairly easily.
--tons of recipes on line to show technique to anchor in feathers, wire, flash etc.  just take your time... speed will come later.
--Materials cheap so don't hesitate to take the razorblade to it and start over if you're not satisfied.
--I usually pinch the barb before tying just in cast I get a great fly then bust the point pinching the barb.
