Over the weekend, I had the chance to fish Alta Lake at Whistler and Fountain Lake in Fountain Valley/Lilooet.
First Alta: Fished Alta for the first time for a couple of hours. Was intrigued by the fish Rodney had been pulling out of there over the last few springs. As soon as we launched the boat it was only a matter of a few minutes that we were able to land our first Cutty. Was a pretty windy out but over the next couple of hours the two of us landed 8 rainbows and 2 cutties. Nothing bigger than 12 inches. All fish were caught on a micro dark olive black bead headed leech.
Second lake was Fountain Lake. I fished this lake as a kid around thirty years ago. Was already at Whistler so we thought we would enjoy the drive up to Lillooet via Duffy Lake road and head into fountain valley to Fountain Lake.
Didn't get up there and in the water until about 2:30pm but after a few minutes of searching for some fish one of my buddies hooks into a decent one. Shortly after, and within a span of about 5 minutes, my buddy hooks and lands three more.
Realizing he had a hot fly, I changed mine which was similar in colour but a little larger (imitating a long dragon fly nymph). Between 2:30-5:00pm we hooked and landed close to forty fish. The largest being about 2 lbs, but all very scrappy fish.
The night was very cold and wet sleeping in a one season tent but we got up this morning and started fishing around 8:00. It was a little slower this time but by 11:00 we had landed about 15 rainbows, again nothing over 2 lbs. All fish were caught on either a large gold bead headed dark olive green wooly bugger and a very large fly pattern that imitates the larger/longer dragon fly nymph. (this pattern was shown to me by a guy who fishes the caribou a lot. I have had incredible success on all the lakes in the thompson/caribou region as well as hooking into some larger fish in courtney on this fly)
After the fishing was done, we drove from Lillooet to Lyton, following the fraser river. What an amazing drive. Wouldn't want to drive this in the winter but it was incredibly scenic.
I think that's it for trout fishing. Will now be getting ready for the steelhead season!
Will attach some pics when in a bit.
