B.C.'s green river blamed on prank Postmedia NewsDecember 30, 2010 Greater Victoria's Goldstream River has turned a glowing shade of green.Photograph by: Facebook, ...VICTORIA — It was likely some pranksters who turned the waters of a Victoria river fluorescent green this week, officials say.

Horrified nature-lovers watched Wednesday as water from the Goldstream River, flowing past Goldstream Provincial Park's picnic area, mysteriously changed colour.

While onlookers worried about the effect on fish and wildlife, samples were collected by the Langford Fire Department and given to teams from the provincial Environment Ministry.

"Ministry staff believe the cause of the colouring is a water-tracing dye used in the testing of sanitary water systems," said B.C. Environment Ministry spokesman Dan Gilmore.

The ministry considers the incidents to be vandalism, he said.

If the green colouring is confirmed to be water-testing dye, it is not believed to be harmful to fish and wildlife.

The river returned to its usual colour within an hour.

Fire Chief Bob Beckett said a fountain in Langford also ran green Wednesday morning.

Just watched the early news, they said it was green dye, not harmful and not to worry, just let it take it's course.
