Drifting Rivers In A Fishcat 10' ir
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:14:08 PM »

Was wondering if anyone here has drifted rivers in there pontoon ?. Bought a 10' fish cat Ir stand up I drifted a short distance on the Cowichan in the upper section from the weir to Greendale rd felt safe and stable. Thinking of drifting the Cowichan for steelies once the water comes down a bit she is really running right now. Any in put would be appreciated thinking of putting in at Stoltz pool drifting down to Sandy have another buddie with a pontoon who has done the drift over 30 times we would be going together.

--I'm sure you'll get all the usual safety tips and pre planning ideas.

--Major thing I found was a good rod holder in a handy location to quickly put rod in if you get into trouble or having to use oars.

--while during s slow drift I was casting and hung up the line so put rod in holder that would allow reel to move and quickly grabbed the oars to get into a position where I could free the line.

--On one occasion I caught the rod tip on an overhang branch.. as rod was facing eyes up river the branch just bent the rod and no hang up.. if eyes had been pointing downstream it might have hung up on the branch.

I had a 9 ft. Outcast pontoon.  But I found for lakes it was good and river maybe not the best.  I noticed that guys floating down rivers in pontoon boats have boats with pontoons that have really big curls on the end of each tube )both ends).  This is for hitting the rapids, otherwise like my old boat with bigger waves they roll over the pontoon onto your waist etc.

Good luck, sounds like fun.
