Thank goodness I've matured from my younger days....but when as a teen do remember of the COMPETITION FEELINGS that entered in when fishing with friends.
One time a male friend got 3 fish to our nothing.
In the rowboat was a teen girl who was just a friend to us two guys.  The girl & I got skunked & the other guy 3 fish.
Had feelings of being mad & jealous & the feelings were not hidden well either...

Same thing when bar fishing with 4-5 guys ...we were so competitive. We'd tease the heck out of each other.....

Thank goodness...now a days if I get skunked & others get the fish IT'S NO BIG DEAL ...&  happy for them.
But I bet many fisherman friends are very competitive & want to out fish their buddy (s).

But competition is a good thing too  I guess. ( that's why some will not share their "how to"fishing secrets...)

Yes, when I was little younger (in my teens), I was usually pretty competetive natured when out fishing with the buds and bros and such. Now I'm a little older (28) and I am just as happy if not more when a fishing companion is lucky enough to have success.   As for sharing flies, tips, secrets with fishing compainions...I'll always try to help. 
At my extended families annual fly-fishing getaway we have prizes for biggest fish and smallest fish, including released fish, although a highly sought after prize in our highly competetive ranks, everyone is happy and proud of the winner 'cause getting to spend time with friends and family and fishing at the same time is what we are really there to do and enjoy.
As for sharing knowledge with complete strangers...I guess it depends on you, personally I have no problem helping seemingly nice strangers without giving away too much.  There's lots to be learnt from others, sometimes some simple observation is just as effective.
I guess the saying can be applied to fishing in a way..."a good magician never gives away his secrets"
I'd say a good fisherman never gives away ALL their secrets.

I fish with my younger brother which is always a good time and we always help each other out, like if one of us gets on to fish we always let the other one know whats going on, but I will say that at 26 and him 21 the competitiveness still sneaks in once and a while especially when he out fish's me, which rarely happens
