how do I "easily" remove the c-clip on abu reels?
« on: August 27, 2004, 09:28:25 AM »

hey there

I was cleaning my reels and despite years of doing it I still have a hassle with easily taking off the little c-clip under the handle - any easy tips? a tool. or? I do not want to use pliers on account of damaging the worm...

It shouldn't be that hard to remove with a screwdriver or pliers... but if you really want you can buy a c-clip remover (I don't remeber the proper name)... just aske the counter guy at Canadian Tire.

Yes just like CJ said, thumbnails. The c-clip shouldn't be that tight just push gently over a white surface (in case you drop it).

Good idea about the white paper! I lost my c-clip one time in a dark green carpet and didn't find it until about a month later  ::)

Use pliers but put one set of teeth against the clip ends and the other teeth of pliers above the clip on the post and close pliers, this will push the clip off slightly then just put a small scewdriver between post and clip and pop it free onto something white or light in color. I have done this many times right on the riverside if the reels needs adjusting or quick repair

this year I had to create a new hook end on a spring inside my dads Abu 5001 riverside because his drag spring hook end broke off 15 mins into the morning :-(

do not put screwdriver between post before pushing it back first or it will go flying, trust me

If you do not have set of c clip pliers. Two tiny jewellers screwdrivers work.Gently pull toward each other then carefully lift out the clip.Otherwise Princess auto.Cheap like Borscht.

I use the tool (don't know what it's called) that comes with the reel - if you still have it.  It acts as both a screwdriver and a wrench to remove the nut that holds the reel handle unit in place.  I like to use a white rag and systematically place all the parts in order on it so I don't lose parts or lose track of which order they are assembled.  Good luck.

Flat blade screw driver and catch the c-clip as it flies off with a kleenex.

I use my pocket knife. Put the tip into one of the small openings in the clip (thats why they are there) and pry very lightly against the shaft comes right off.
