Atlantic Cod in Port Hardy???
« on: April 30, 2011, 01:57:12 PM »

Today on channel 220 (HD) there was a fishing show of Canadian Sport Fishing to Lund's Lodge. The lodge is in the general area of Port Hardy. I was amazed to see Italo hooking into big cod that looks like the Atlantic Cod. Do we have Atlantic Cod migrated into the Pacific? What month of the year can you hook these in Port Hardy area? It will be nice to add these into the bottom fishing target species besides halibuts and rock fish. Has any one caught a cod like that?

Caught some big ones at Port Hardy many years ago and 100% of them were wormy.   We learned not to take them home.

Commercial fishermen catch them all the time, their not an elusive creature and their one of the best eating fish going. A lot of fish have worms, that's why you bleed them and let them sit for awhile, until rigamortis sets in and the worms vacate the meat. There was nothing wrong with your fish IMO.

Yes, I was catching them 20 some years back while gill netting one summer.  I was told you had to leave them over night so the worms all move into the guts and then clean them.  I said no thanks...I will stick to Salmon.
