People releasing fish/shrimp @ Rocky Point
« on: June 05, 2011, 06:13:17 PM »

Was at Rocky Point (Port Moody) today and saw a group of people releasing sole(or flounder, not sure and could have been some other varieties in the mix) shrimp and oysters into the water at the end of the dock on the left side. Not just a few but many buckets of fish and shrimp mostly,is this proper ?  Took pictures of the truck and few of the people.  Some of the people involved where having a picnic in the park. Has anyone any ideas?

I believe it has to do with some Buddhist beliefs. Saw a feature on the news where Buddhists were buying live crabs from fish markets and releasing them.

Yes it's Buddhists buying brownie points by releasing caged critters-that's why divers  have  spotted Lobster up that way in the past.

I know a guy who worked the bait barges down in San Diego-Buddhists would come in/throw down large and he'd go out and and just dump nets full of  bait fish back into the sea!

It's when they start releasing Goldfish etc. from pet stores that needs to be addressed. I've seen them in the creek going through Watershed park and wondered how they got there? Maybe writing some of the Buddhist temples and asking them to educate them.

that's kind of concerning....would hate to think of those snakehead fish things being released in sloughs and lakes.  Good intentions;yes howver it could easily cause more harm to other fishes and animal species that they're not aware of.

This practice should be stopped. Invasive species can destroy the habitat and wipe out native species. Perhaps these people are just ignorant. Education is the best way to help out waters.

Like many other religions.  A passage passed down can be interpreted in different ways when the situation at that certain timeline was not taken into consideration.

Releasing a creature into an environment not knowing if it'll survive or would cause damage to others is far from being a correct action.

You guys need to chill. These "buddhists" are well aware f the difference between indigeous and introduced species. The goldfish and lobsters found were probably Not released by them but by other sources.

The Lobster up the Arm was a pilot project many years ago by the Gov.
