Flies for small cutthroat
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:50:33 PM »

Been fishing some local lakes and such on a spin casting rod, but I would much rather fly fish. What are good patterns for small cutties in smallish lakes? I know it's a rather vague question, but any info would be great. Also method of fishing that fly would be nice too, thanks.

I would also recommend 'the Gilly- A Fly Fishers Guide'.  Great resource for any fly fisherman, old and new.

for local lakes that hold cutties, I've found trolling an olive leech to be as productive as any other method I've used.  black, maroon and red also work.  If you aren't into trolling, any of the still water classics flies (ie. doc spratley, hare's ear nymph, wooly bugger and the leeches too) cast and retrieved will produce as well.  Just gotta make them the appropriate size for the fish targetted.
