Low Profile Casting Reels
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:00:35 AM »

Aside from ergonomics, any advantage to low profile vs. "round" casting reel ?  Do they stand up to the fight of a chinook or chum ? Welcome any feedback and comments.

Probably get burned out faster on larger fish as the drag surface area would have to be smaller.

Dont' think I'd use a low profile reel on Springs or Chum - Steelhead, for sure.

My buddy always harrasses me about my "bass real" but I got the curado and love it. Reals in the chum just fine.

Looking to get a low profile reel myself, Do these reels preform the same as a higher end calcutta or luna, compared to there size? I do have both the round calcutta and luna baitcasters, but am looking to put together a smaller lighter setup mainly for steelhead, since you spend more time casting then fighting fish. I will be pairing the reel up with a Lamiglas X 106 MC Rod.

Would like to hear back from guys that have used both the round and lowprofile baitcaster, what do you think? thanks

I checked out Shimanos line up of LP baitcaster, they have 10 types available. Is there really that much difference between the 10 models?

--can replace drag system on most reels with carbontex, larger surface doesn't necessarily mean better heat distribution, in some instances larger disc can produce more heat and warping.

--I'm definitely not an expert on carbontex but have been playing with some on my old peetz reel.
--Several companies offer custom cut carbontex for specific reels... extreme variation in pricing.. hopefully there is some justification for price differences such as thickness and precision of cut part etc.
--I would have some concern with the level wind mechanisms..some being plastic with metal insert might crack or bend with large fish and heavy drag setting.

I've got a curado 201e7 on my x106mc, its not bad. Nice and light compared to my Calcutta 401te and luna 253l but it's definetly not as smooth

I would say that Shimano Curado 301 would suit your needs.  I just put my new one through the paces fishing the Vedder for two weeks straight.  I spooled it up with 230 yrds of 30lb power pro and it worked flawlessly.  Mind you I wasn't catching huge fish but the drag was smooth as silk and i'm sure it would handle the big boys just as well.

I use a Shimano Curado matched up with a 2 power 8'6 casting rod for spoon fishing. I use it for steelhead and coho and I haven't had any problems managing fish in the high teens.

I was a die hard conventional baitcaster fan starting with an ABU Ambassadeur many years ago and my latest reel being a Luna 253L.
Some how for whatever reason, I was slow in making the switch.
After seeing some of my fishing buddies using Curados this season, I also got myself a Curado 201E7.
All I can say is, I should have done this years ago.
The biggest difference is weight: Curado weighs 223g vs 315g for my Luna.
If we consider how much casting we do in a typical steelhead or salmon season, this 100g or so difference is no laughing matter.
Also, because the spool is so light, it casts as far, if not further, than a spinning reel.
Yes, my Luna is more solid built but I think more people will foregone some durability in exchange for lighter weight for steelhead or salmon fishing.
Maybe I am getting old. ;)

The line just FLIES of those Curados.  Will definitely be getting one.

Take a look at Cabelas.com - our dollar destroys theirs, and their prices on Curados is really good.  I think they're even on sale right now

Yup, they are: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shimano174-Curado174-E-Baitcast-Reel/1148885.uts?destination=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D104760180&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104760180

Thanks for the link, thats a good deal. How can I not get one... ;D

Is there even that much of a difference between the 300 and the 200?  What exactly is the gear ratio referring too?

--Or you could pay inflated price on Canadian cabelas site and note the exchange rate still giving less than one dollar Canadian on US site.
--I have complained many times to shimano about the price differences.. Often we pay more wholesale for shimano reels in Canada than the USA advertised retail prices... Problem is I like the reels! but it still ticks me off.
--Please... every time you buy a Shimano product in USA send a note to Shimano and complain... until they get the message!
--I always promot buy in Canada and in particular from your local store.. in this case the local dealer is getting ripped off and just passing it on to US.

Hi all,

Just wondering how durable these Shimano Curado's are? I'm in LA right now and am itching to pick up a Calcutta 400B. Unfortunately, I spent too much at the outlets already so I'm limited in budget and don't want to get another Abu. Looking into either Shimano or Quantum. Reels to change it up before my Abu 6600 c4 pooches on me. Thanks for the replies.
