I took my 11 year old daughter out today. The weather report said the winds were going to be light and die down in the evening. We got to Porteau just as the tide was about switch and my hopes were high. We motored up to Furry Creek and trolled up and down the beach as we waited for the tide to come in. The winds were blowing more than I would have liked and the chop made spotting fish difficult. We finally got sight of a fin and then a tail at about 3:30, however, despite our repeated attempts to coax them to bite, we got nothing. Well not nothing. My daughter feels a little tug tug as she is reeling in her pink spoon and sure enough there was a small greenling hanging off the spoon. After about a half hour of nothing and with no more visible signs of fish we begin to move and troll again. As we near the end of the beach, my daughter's rod bends again. Nothing big, but definitely something on there. She is dozing off at this point so I reel the line in and confirm there is something on and so I pass the rod to her and she reels in a small flounder. She was quite tickled by this one and I snap a picture with my phone. As we troll back to Porteau her rod bends again and this time it is a pink, having taken her small orange croc, and I pass her the rod again as I reel in my fly line. She quickly cranks it in her excitement and has it flopping madly next to the boat, so I grab the net and make a couple stabs at netting it, but it is no where near ready to come in, so I get her to ease off on the drag and tire it out. Big Mistake. The rod bends over and the fish sounds like a spring. Her rod is bent and the line is peeling off her small spinning reel, so I tighten up the drag, but it is still sounding and peeling line in pulses... and then I know it is a seal. I take the rod from her and I can feel the seal on the end. I tighten up the drag some more and I managed to pull the salmon free and quickly begin reeling it in but then just as it get within twenty feet of the boat the rod bends over again and the line peels off again. I tried to pull it free but the line snaps and the seal takes off with her salmon and her croc. We secretly hope it get indigestion. On the way back, she says to me..."Well this has been a productive day! "
