Tidal Fraser River, August 29th 2011
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:45:38 PM »

We gave it another go tonight from 4:00pm until 7:30pm, knowing that they would be more fish coming in than yesterday. They started rolling in front of us at 5:30pm and for two hours small schools of fish went by. Most of the activity occurred when the tide turned. With many fish coming into the river, one would expect to hook at least one. Out of two dozen anglers, only one fish was briefly hooked. Poor water clarity is going to be a factor for the rest of this year's pink salmon season.

I was out 3:00pm - 7:30 south of Alex Fraser bridge, only saw one fish jump, nobody I could see got a bite.
Some folks were fishing of a small boat in front of me, they went empty handed a well.
I tried everything, spoons, spinners, buz bomb, all kind of color, not even a bite.

The day I reported my catch it was sunny, no wind and little turbulence to the water and vis was the best I'd seen it (decent).  Other days I've been out with a chop and a lot of boat traffic and vis has been atrocious.

Water is still dirty here in the Chilliwack area this morning, not worth fishing for biting fish. :-X

Yep. That water has to be less turbulent and the sun has to be shining if we are going to see an immediate improvement in water clarity. Under those conditions, we'd be getting fish for sure today. There's always tomorrow... ;) The weather is supposed to be sunny later this week. Combining that with thicker schools coming into the river, it's going to be a good time... ;D

Thanks for the update, Rod.  What are realistic expectations regarding visibility for the rest of the season?  Like, how quickly could the clarity *potentially* clear up, in your opinion?

It's unlikely that the (Tidal) Fraser River will clear up to 2 to 3 ft (which would be the seasonal norm for this time of the year) anytime soon. It's a large system, all the runoff from every tributary has to go through here so the clarity takes a few weeks to change sometimes. I hope that I am wrong though. ;)

i was one of those anglers...sorry for the quick wave 'hello' Rod, should have chatted with you and at least said hello to your wife, but i came late and couldn't stay long.

my brother's coworker managed to hook into one briefly and saw a few risers, but water clarity and debris was definitely a challenge...the overcast weather didn't help the situation either. checked out some other spots on my way home...lots of anglers, but not much action...hopefully clarity will improve later this week.

No worries, I could have come over. Everybody was busy trying to catch that first pink salmon. ;D

Yes for peace and tranquility.  ;D ;D

I believe the Fraser water will clear in the next couple of days as it is getting colder up high. At alake last week it was 4.3 celiuos at around 4,000 feet elevation.

Yes, that is my worry too.  At this stage, I'll take 12+ inches of visibility... that would be double what I saw on Sunday!  Oh well, who knows what the future holds!
