Tidal Fraser River, August 21st 2011: Pinks
« on: August 21, 2011, 04:48:01 PM »

Spent a few hours this afternoon tossing spoons and spinners for Pinks . Didn't see any jumpers , rollers or any other form of salmon aerobatics .

One other person tossing spoons near me , no action either .

This was near Number Two Road Richmond .

Hot Hot Hot in the sun !

Water seemed to be a bit clearer than a few days ago .

Going to give it another shot tomorrow , maybe the clouds and rain will make things better ;)

The rain will help to bring the fish in but the water is way too murky to effectively fish for pinks.
Might be 5" of clarity - need 2 or 3 feet.

Maybe it will clear up by next weekend.

Spent a few hours on Brownsville and saw a Jack landed (bar fishing) and a few pinks on spoons taken.  A few risers/jumpers  seen, but no action for me.  I was out on Friday, too.  They are there, just not in numbers yet and as mentioned the clarity isn't very good at all.

I had a go myself in the Tidal Fraser twice over the weekend.  Same experience.

I also got the impression the water was clearer than it had been earlier in the week which was encouraging.   Saw some risers but I am pretty sure they were too big to be pinks.    I guess another week or too should be looking a lot better.

I have never seen 2-3 feet vis in the lower Fraser. And with flashy spoons, pinks are certainly catchable with much less than that.

Actually 2-3ft of visibility is pretty common in the colder months. In fact, in a dry and low-snow pack year, It can be quite clear after mid August as well.

This pic was from Steveston in April 2009.

True enough Rod, it can be that clear in winter/spring before the freshet.  I am guilty of not heeding my own story of the 3 scientists observing the sheep on the hillside.

I should have said that I have not experienced 2-3 feet of visibility in the Lower Fraser in the past 7-8 pink seasons.

Having said that, that level of vis is not necessary to successfully fish pinks.

I remember fishing that clear water about 6 years ago.
Fishing for Pinks and hitting the odd Chinook up around Langley.
Thats why its nice to get up past Deroche where the river is truly a different place all together......
