So, this afternoon and evening (Saturday), I ventured out to the Deboville Slough, where it meets the Pitt River.  Fishing from shore, I casted out into the Pitt River, at the edge of a weed bed. Then 30 seconds later, I thought I had another Cutthroat on the line.  Decent fight!  Reel it in, and it was a Starry Flounder!!  In complete fresh water.  Where I'm standing, I must be at least 40 - 50 kms from where the Fraser River meets the ocean.  

Some passerby fisherman in a boat asked me how the fishing was, and I told him about the flounder that I caught 10 minutes prior.  He was in complete disbelief.   Needless to say, I had quite the variety of catch out there today. lol   Cutthroats, Pikeminnows, Bass, and a Flounder.    Saw a Beaver and a Bear too.

They quite commonly go up rivers.
Maybe not very often as far as you found one, but they do go a long ways up river. Lots of them live right in estuaries in a mix of FW and SW.
They like to spawn right in river mouths too.

Caught a few of them in that area over the years.
Just wait until you hook into a Sturgeon one day.
Great spot for Bulls but we called them Dollys back in the day.

Flounder are quite tolerant of fresh water.  River estuaries seem to be a preferred habitat.

I'm aware of flounders being in Estuaries...say for example the Fraser River in Richmond.  But way up in the Pitt River?  This is not even close to an estuary!  It is tidal though.

How would I catch a Bull trout in that area?  Keep in mind, I'm fishing from shore, and I'm fishing at the mouth of the Deboville slough.  The water is pretty shallow where I'm fishing...I think.   I really DO NOT want to catch a sturgeon, unless it's really small.  I'm only using light spinning gear.

Best in spring during freshet if there is some clarity, Ive had good results for dollies with small spinners.


Weve caught little flounder there while bait fishing, as well as sturgeon squawfish crayfish and once a clam had got onto buddies hook lol

 just about a 20 lbs flounder was on our lines and brought to the boat in the upper Fraser, just below the Harrison river.

20 lbs!! That's huge for a flounder!  Wasn't a halibut?   Did you keep it?

Back in the seventies we used to get Flounder as big as dinner plates when we were Coho fishing the Salmon River in Fort Langley.

Beside inhabiting the estuaries, starry flounder are known for moving into the freshwater part of the river. I've been told by one of the more experienced anglers in the Valley that The furthest upstream on the Fraser River where starry flounder have been caught was near Hope, several decades ago.

no way in fraser.. otherwise I got to see it in my eyes.....
