When I got to the river to fish the tide the bite was certainly on as I was seeing fish after fish hitting the beach, most were coho, hatchery too. I got the Leaf Craft #4 in the water as quick as possible, its around 1:15 I think and in no time I was into the action too but they keep getting off and a few misses thrown in for good measure. I find it surprising the bite is so good, middle of the day with the sun shinning brightly down onto the water. Of course coho are funny guys, you never know when the bite roe with a vengeance. I had two cash my roe as I am reeling in.
Seeing the others having a great time lead to my frustration as I lost 7 before I finally landed one, a small coho jack. In between this I hooked a snag and lost everything. As you know I have hundreds of floats but When I look to put on a Maple Leaf DNE I discover I have no float stoppers or even a tooth pick to hold the float so I have to use a Styrofoam, twist around, donot like them at all. Of course better than going to shore to get a small twig to use but I finally do and put on a DNE and get a tooth pick from the truck to hold it firm.
As I get back fishing it slows for me but the others continue hauling them in, I finally hook another, a good one too but of course it falls off as well. . A fellow on the other side adds it was a nice one as he saw it thrashing from his position on the opposite bank. Maybe its the hook so I go to a bigger size to see if that helps. The other anglers thin out, all going home with their limits I think. I then hook the snag again and instead of breaking off I pull anchor and drift down to free it. The Leaf Craft is being a bit miserable to row and I see why, I have lost some air so to shore again, to pump it up before I go swimming with the fishes.
When I get back out I am the only one left. I promptly miss a fish and there is no action for about 20 minutes so I say, the last cast. The last cast was well worth making as I am into a nice fish, the twisting , turning and thrashing signals coho. I play it carefully and its nice sight as I can see it clearly in the clear water as it now swims close to the raft. It so clear I see it sports an adipose fin, figures the way things are going. I release it at the side of the raft leaving it in the water at all times, number 2 of the year landed. I think well maybe the bite is back on but I will never know as I release the coho the hook gets snagged on the bottom of the raft so I have no choice but to go ashore again. Well I think today is not my day so decide to back it in.
On the way back to shore I see what I think is a float floating by, I give chase. As get closer I see it is a pill bottle, not a float. I have picked them up before and sometimes there is some fishing stuff in them. This one does too as I shake it I find there is 17 hooks of all sizes. Maybe will use one tomorrow to change my bad hook and land ratio.
Well the day was not bad I guess, a lovely fall day, 17 hooks, $30 worth of tins found, one jack for dinner and The Leafs win again.
Time to go to bed and dream of what will happen when the tide once again comes in. Heck I can't wait that long, a couple of hours to fish at first light, before church, my luck will change soon, I think.
