Chilliwack River, October 19th 2011
« on: October 19, 2011, 04:57:24 PM »

Started at first light mid river and saw a few fish rising.  One brief encounter with a bright coho on roe bag.

Drove down to see the rail bridge in Yarrow and decided not to stay.  A guy came to ask for jumper cables, I had taken them out of the truck on the weekend and forgot to put them back in.  Crappy place to have your battery die.  Was stopped by dfo on the way out and they wanted to know if I had heard that Chum were shut down as of October 16, 2011  seemed pleased that I was aware.  Told them about the guy at the end of the road needing a jump start, they had cables.  Hope he got the truck started.

Went down to KWB and drove up and down the dike.  Fished the bridge and hooked a large doe on roe...gently released.  Guy beside me asked why I didn't keep it.  Told him 0 retention on Chums as of Oct 16.  Thought the guy below heard me.  30 minutes later he hooks a similar Chum.....bonk.  He was 400 feet away and with the river and bridge noise didn't hear me warn him.  On my way out I spoke to him and he wasn't aware.

Nice day for a drive.

Had a few hrs to kill this morning, so headed out.  Nothing on blades first light so decided to try out my fresh new roe.. nothing quick then I guess a pod of fish were going past.  Hooked 3 bright Coho... landed 2.  Both wild.... snapped a quick pic of one of them...and lost a huge doe Coho.  After a short while and some chum later i decided to try another spot, hooked 2 more including landing a nice hatch doe.  After which got a call from a friend in need and had to head off the river!
Anyhow I'll be back at it in the morning with some more fresh roe.  Not a bad day... and some beautiful weather. Hoping for some rain tomorrow!!

Hi Cal,

It was me ran out of battery this morning. >:( Thanks for informing DFO. They were supper helpful and got me and my brother back on the road. :D
It was a bit slow for us around the train bridge so we moved up above Tamahi and manged to hook and land a very nice Marble Spring. Also hooked but lost an 8 to 10 lb Coho.

Cheers,

Very nice... We were going to give it a go today but the cold still hovered around. Tomorrow morning is it. :)

No worries Capman.  Glad you were able to get your truck started.  And nice that you got into fish.

I haven't decided where the chosen spot should be tomorrow yet. This is what happens when you leave the river alone for a week. ;D

It was another successful day at the river.  But it was SLOW.  We started early just like yesterday and hoping to have the same action.  But it didn't pan out the same.
Entire morning and early afternoon it was DEAD.   Not that there are no fish but they just weren't interested in any offerings.  We even got to sit down to enjoy coffee and lunch
that's how bad it was.

Late afternoon with light disappearing behind trees and rain started falling around 4pm, we started to see nibbles.  Finally FISH ON!!!  We didn't get our limits but still good.

I was out Wednesday too. Haven't fished much this year and explored different spots on the Canal from Yarrow to the Highway bridge, pretty much fishing roe all day. Retained one nice coho and released a few bright chums along with a jack coho and little rainbow. Some of the regulars I met also mentioned things were slower than they had been recently, expecially after first light.

Looks like a Curado, I have three of them. Great little reels.
