Lots of seals in the Fraser R.
« on: November 16, 2011, 06:58:43 PM »

Not even a wk ago...was boating on the Fraser R basically to run the outboard / kicker & charge up the batteries...
Seems like a long time ago because the weather has been the " pits" but the day that I was out was high tide...water calm...low wind & SUNNY. ( last Thurs)
But saying all that ..was surprised to view so many seals on the river.
Possibly 2 hrs on the water & must of seen at least 20 sightings...assume some were the same seals...on the return trip to the launch.

But where the seals are ...salmon must be in the water as well.  ;)

At this point in time the seals are on the verge of taking over the planet. There's just so many of them. Don't let your small dog or child out of your sight when seals are prowling. Which is what they do 24-7.

I saw a seal in Morris Lake many yrs ago and was quite surprised! Swam up the Fraser into the Harrison and the up Morris creek into the Lake chasing after the Chum. The cuthroat fishing was really crappy that day.Thinking the fish were pretty spooked and not in a biting mood.Amazing how far they will travel up freshwater to chase after the Salmon.Have also seen them as far as Hope.Probally swim past Hope chasing after the Salmon.

haha..exactly like someone else here said.  Big deal, like they're the real problem.   Who cares how many fish they eat anyways.  It could never compare to the damage humans do on fish stocks.  Besides, it's in their natural habitat, and their natural food source.  It's not like they hopped up onto land and raided our vegetable and fruit farms.  It's more like we're the overpopulated ones, naturally, in this area (BC), taking too many salmon, not the seals.

I personally like seeing them around, they're kind of entertaining and cool looking.  Sort of like a playful water dog.

Agreed. I dont think there is that many swimming up the Fraser to make much of a difference.Just surprised how far from the ocean that they travel.Might be that there after the salmon caught in the nets during openings.

lol  yeah and it's their loss...swimming around in that filth.   Poor guys, they don't know any better.   They'll be wondering why their babies are born with 3 eyes.

And they're thinking like people in the way that some fish for salmon in the river, as the fish are more concentrated in great numbers into a smaller area, when compared to the ocean.
