...needs your help.  It will only take a few minutes.  The Kokish River on Vancouver Island is a neat summer steelhead river that is in pretty serious danger of having a run of the river power project installed which will divert 9km of salmon, char, trout and steelhead- accessible water from the river.  That's bad.  The river is only 11.3km long to begin with.  Please write a a quick blurb along the lines of:

*fish need sufficient water to migrate up river
*juvenile fish need water in river
*diversion of water from fish-accessible stretches of the Kokish River unacceptable as it jeopardizes BC's natural heritage

It will only take maybe 5 min, you know that if you're browsing forums, you've got 5 min to spare...

Thanks for posting that info Matt, its good to know that there is still a way to spread our voice and prehaps show others that there are people concerned who are watching over our ricers, lakes, and streams. I hope other jump in on this!

Please take a few minutes out of your day to save the Kokish river. We all spent time reading threads on these fishing forums to discuss fishing techniques and equipment, but what about saving the very fish we are pursuing. The Environmental Assessment Office of BC has already approved the IPP project on the Kokish river. This is our last chance to prevent the extinction of the Summerrun Steelhead, Coho salmon, trout and char which call the Kokish river home. If this project goes through it will set a precedence for other IPP's to be constructed on other anadromous fish inhabitated streams in BC.

Thanks guys, I'm very pleased with the number of people who have made the effort to send in a letter.  They ARE read and I really do think it makes a difference.  

While the loss of Kokish summer runs could be viewed as just a drop in the bucket, it puts it in perspective for me to remember that each run of fish is quite unique.  If, say, a Bulkley summer run were transplanted to the Kokish, I think its pretty safe to say its chance ofspawning would be significantly lower than that of steelhead of Kokish origin.  Each population is unique, and letting the Kokish go isn't just letting go of (?)% of BC's summer run steelhead, its letting go of a distinct run of fish that has adapted over thousands of years to be ideal for that particular river.  If the IPP were to go ahead and it lead to disappearance of Kokish summer runs, that run is gone for good.  

Thats pretty final... and that's why I wrote my letter.
