Usually I fly fish, but there are some areas that are not conducive to singled handed casting (like the lower Fraser) and I'll throw a few spoons.
I will only use it a few times per year but I needed to build a custom spinning rod (of course).

My choice for blank is the AmTak Black Matrix in 7' med-light power, fast action, and I used some of the more modern techniques that minimize weight, swing weight, and improve sensitivity, castability, and style such as:
Split grip design with folding hook keeper between the grips to reduce weight and prevent interference while casting.
Aero reel seat with integrated front grip (front cork turns to lock down the reel).
New Guide Concept guide layout for improved castability.
4mm OD Micro Guides for the running guides.
Mix of burnt and rubberized cork in bumblebee pattern.
Maroon silk thread (colour preserved) with gold accents.

I am really happy with how it turned out and it casts a mile even with tiny spoons.

In general a custom spinning rod will be more expensive than a comparable action store bought rod, though of course it would not be custom and most factory rods do not include the modern techniques like New Guide Concept.

In this case I got the blank for 1/2 price, and I am moving towards only fishing with rods that I have built so it made sense.
Blank: $27
Reel seat: $15
Guides, Winding Checks, hook keeper, Tip Top: $30
Cork: $10
Epoxy, Glue, Thread, Solvents: $10
Total: $92

Effort was about 15 hours (this is a hobby, I don't pay myself).

Compare this to a higher end factory rod with micros (i.e. from Carrot Stix) for around $150.
Another customization that I incorporated was the reel seat placement, which is exactly placed for my arm length and reeling position.

Nice build Typhoon! 

Wraps are tasteful and tight.  Nice metal winding checks and end of each cork section.  Split handle is a nice feature.  The moose butt cap is very custom.  Puts my builds to shame.

Looks like your ready for the pinks in the tidal portion!

It's a metal button from the local fabric store. I have some with Moose, elk, and greyhound.
I just inset in the cork and epoxy them in. I thought about adding a layer of epoxy over the button but it would just scratch.
If it gets worn I can always replace it.
